fuel fume tube

Can someone help me out with this question. Right now I have a marine style USCG approved air cleaner that has a tube going from the air cleaner to the fuel pump. I think it's for the fuel fume hose. I bought a K&N filter that has no where to plug in the hose. Can I just cap off the one on the fuel pump and not use it or do I need to keep running the hose? If so where do I get one for the k&N air cleaner? if you enlarge the pic you can see the tube in front of the air cleaner. Any help would be great. Thanks Marty

Marty, that hose comes from the top of the fuel pump as a safety and is required to keep you USCG rating for the fuel pump. I believe if the air filter you have is rated as a USCG approved flame arrestor(it will have an SAE J1171 decal on it), there would be an accessory available for adding the fitting to keep the hose attatched...

The way it works is when the fuel pump diaphram fails, the second diaphram pumps fuel into the engine and kills it, no running engine=no fuel spilled in the bilge...which in turn =not buring it to the water line...

I say contact K&N and see what's avail...

thanks for the reply I do have one for the k&N but the tube hole is much bigger then the tubbing itself. Maybe k&N will have one with a smaller tube hole. Would it be possible to connect a larger tube at the end so it can fit with the k&N filter? Hope you understand my question? Thanks again.

this is the one I want to put on, I kept it from my old boat. but the hose fitting is to big for the hose.

Marty, if you look at that fitting under the old flame arrestor, it goes about half way to the center of the air horn, which would spill the fuel into the carb and not out around the outside....This is fairly important...I think K&N makes what you need, I'll take a gander later...

thanks for taking the time to look but how would that mount. Would it mount between the top cover and the element or through the top where the screw goes in. It looks alot closer them what I had. I think I will call them mon. I want to thank you for taking the time to searh for this. 16 bucks can do..... Marty

I think I take the top cover off and line the hole over the carb and put the cover back on and screw it back down so it just sticks out. Then the hose connects to it..... I'll check it out next week and let you know..... thanks again your a cook guy and I owe yo a cold one if we ever run into each other...... Marty

Wow, that looks like a cool boat, mine is not even in the same club LOL.

After all, it's name is White Trash II...

She's rough, but I have enough stuff to make it a runner (355 ci Chevy small block and an Alpha I third gen.)..

Got about $1200 in it as it stands, motor is done, outdrive is done, seat frames are templated and being made of T-6 aluminum, electrical is done...Minus gauges and lights.

everything that I'm finding is for a breather to push the air out of the air cleaner. Nothing that would be able to use as a overflow of gas to the carb in case of a fuel pump problem.

Question? Could I plug the hose from the air cleaner into one of the plugged up inlets (2 black plugs) in the carb? What are those used for? Sorry first pic does not show both plugs.

I would definately not hook it up to vacuum, which is what all of those ports are for...We'll come up with something...

Actually, I don't really see a problem with attatching it to the highest one on the carb (above the secondary butterfly)...Anyone else see a problem with it?

ud probably be ok using that port, but I would think it would be a better idea to route it into the top of the carb like the stock setup does, because if that line were to have vacuum applied to it , it may cause the diaphragm to repture in the pump. Im not 100% that it would be a problem using that vac port, but I would try and find another place to dump that line in.

Thanks maddogg, I can't beleive that nobody else has this kind of setup. I'm not an expert in engines like most of you but I know enough to get buy but don't know to much about carbs. I did some work for a guy who does carbs so I may stop by and ask him tomorrow. I will let you guys know what the out come is. Any others that would like to chime in thank you in advance.

Alot of the guys here run electric fuel pumps, (myself included) and they dont have this setup at all, but yea, ask the guy you know just to make sure. I dont want to suggest something im not totally positive about and have it cause more trouble for you.

Marty, When you switch to the K&N air filter just drill a small hole at the base of the air cleaner and reinstall the hose and use the the fitting that was in the old spark arrestor.

I think that will work. What do you think GT?

From a safety standpoint, should be OK, I agree with Glenn. But aren't you required to run a Marine Carb with an enclosed Engine compartment in Cali? You are here in AZ I think. That looks to me like a street double pumper.
