Fuel problem? Idk help!!!

Hey guys I've got a 1996 carrera 202xr bowrider with a marine power 454 I just had the carb re-done and when I installed it the boat went back to how it was hard to start and when I do it loads up, at a constant throttle sounds fine but then just loads up again. It has a electric fuel pump on it do those have a pressure regulator on them? Or is this a tank issue. Thanks guys I appreciate your help!!!!

Also the carb is a Holley 800 double pump

i have not checked that yet I did think about that but the only reason I haven't is because the last time it was out it ran like a champ until I switched from right to left tank also I haven't touched the motor since I've had it for 7 yrs now but I'm not ruling that out either

whats your fuel pressure psi, and did you adjust the floats with it on the boat with your fuel pump? you should be at a steady 7psi at idle and nothing under 5 while on the gogo pedal.

I'm no means a carb guy or anything like that. So take this info for what its worth. Floats could be set to high, carter fuel pumps I believe are set at 3-6 psi., and do not have a regulator (if that's what your running). Invest in a fuel pressure gauge to see where your at. Hope this helps a weeee bit.

well I know one thing ill be doin to it, puttin a fuel pressure gauge on it. But no I took the carb to the place I know and he has done it before last time I bolted it up and never had to touch it, this go round I did the same thing, so I called my carb guy and told him he says that it's set at 6psi. And no I didn't adjust it to my fuel pump, when it comes to that part I'm really not good at the carb stuff. So now I'm trying to learn it. I haven't touched it due to the fact I don't know how and I don't want to screw anything else up

anything helps I'm not a carb guy either and I don't know if it has one or not and ya I will be buying one and installing it thank man everything helps

well when you say "its loading" (based off of your description... have you even taken the air cleaner off and let it idle on the trailer or backed into water and see if theres excess fuel? what do the plugs look like? is there soot on the transom?) if your carb is literally dumping fuel into the motor thru the overflow tubes maybe a float is stuck, or they're just set too high.

it doesnt matter if its a "set it on your motor and forget it" carb shop, its wrong. so its time to learn how things work. setting floats isnt terribly complicated and it doesnt require any special tools other than a wrench, screwdriver, and some rags. theres a few youtube videos on how to do it directly from holley.

if you dont feel comfortable trying to set them, then take it to a shop that can tune it for you and get back out on the lake and have fun.

the air cleaner is off now and by the time I get it started to the time I get to the motor which you know as well as I do it's not that far it dies as far as soot on the transom I had a little when it first happened before I took the carb in I thought it was a stuck float cuz it was doin the same thing when it happened I was on plane then let off to come to idle and as soon as I went to give it gas it already died on me had to wait about 5 min for it to restart when I did get it started I had to feather the pedal and work the fwrd rvrs to keep a no wake as soon as I let off It dies when I got it to shore and looked at it my intake around the carb was wet with fuel and on the trailer now it's doin the same thing. Does that help any?

Maybe I missed it, but did you have this problem prior to having the carb "re-done" or was it re-done because of these symptoms?

Who rebuilt it and what was done? Did they simply slap it together with new gaskets or was it tested/tuned before you got it back?

Sounds like a float level/needle valve issue.

fuel curve west I've taken all my carbs to him and he's great I almost think it's in my fuel system and it just got some crap in the needle and the floats stuck but I'm no fuel guy either I'm gonna change both filters today

Take the boat to your carb guy. If tested and tuned. You shouldn't be having the same problem.

ya it's goin today do you think it's a possibility that there was just too much crap in the tank and it just keeps sticking the float or needle? I'm gonna flush the tanks change both filters and water fuel separator

I guess that could be a possibility depending when the last time the filters were changed. Being not to old of a boat you should have aluminum tanks. If fiberglass change out immediately

To all the guys that helped me thank you for all the opinions and options it all helped out I changed all the fuel lines filters drained the tanks and flushed them now the boat sounds great thanks again guys!!!!!!!! I will be at Elsinore on Sunday next week hope some guys will be there blue and grey carrera bowrider

ya I don't know exactly what it was but I changed all the fuel lines flushed the tanks all the filters the carb guy said there was crap in the n/s after I did that and hooked the carb up sounds great thanks again man I really do appreciate it

well I took it out last Sunday and same issue so I took Monday off work replaced fuel pump added a fuel pressure Guage now and took it out this morning runs great
