I need to vent a bit. I know what's going on and it's irritating.
Bought a nice Autometer GPS speedo over the winter and it still doesn't work. Only been out 4 or 5 times due to Elsinore being in really bad shape with the algae bloom, water level is manageable. River is 300 miles so no day trips. Going to Echo Lodge Labor Day to hang with friends.
I'm running a Racing HEI from Magsarus with solid copper plug wires, works great. There's my RF interference big time. I have a complete MSD ignition that I won't be putting back in this boat. I know it will fix it, but it's not what I want to do.
GPS antenna is at the dash which is not far enough away from the engine.
Advice was to get a good set of suppression plug wires. Magnecor makes a great set so I spend the cash and get their best KV85 Competition 8.5mm. Fire it up, seems ok, as soon as I hit it to get on plane I know it's not right. Feels really fat, not missing, just sluggish. Felt similar to when I broke a belt on my Procharger, way too much fuel without the air needed.
GPS works! Wow 25mph instead of No Data.
Interesting that it is so weak of a spark. Looked at the plugs and their all firing and wet with fuel. Even put in a new set, plugs are cheap compared to everything else.
Put the solid copper wires back on and it runs fine.
I just got to this point tonight and can't call Magnecor until tomorrow as their back East.
Talked to Ed yesterday about the ignition and he has some guys running these wires.
Thought about moving the antenna all the way to the front of the boat. Don't want to drill a hole and try and fish the wire. 2 bulkheads in the way and I can't even see all the way up through the holes in the bulkheads.
I think I'll put some 2 way tape on the antenna and run the wire across the top of the bow to see if it will work that way when I'm at the river.
Frustrating yes, but I do enjoy working on my shit. Troubleshooting is a process, the hard part is to always remember to look at the easiest solution first, cause it probably is just that.
