High compression? Nitrous? For ease, a good set of arp head bolts will work good on something not nitroused or boosted... And run less chance of weeping. If you're gonna go boost or nitrous... Then for a few bucks more, the studs are good insurance... But be fore warned... Even gooping the hell out of them, in a non-blind hole block... Every once in a while, you can still get a weeper that will cause a little water in the oil. Not all the time, I get one every ten builds or so... But totally annoying.

Brings me to a question. In a ls based build, for a mild build and a small nitrous shot 150-250 is it really worth the 2-300 more for arp head studs vs the arp head bolts?

I've been running my 5.3 for a year and a half and have ran 16 bottles through it with a 150 shot and haven't lifted a head or had any other issues yet. With stock head bolts.

I'm planning on freshening it up this winter and plan on studding the mains and doing bolts or studs up top.

What's your opinion?

Steve-

I think there is more to it than that.

Ford and Olds have 10 head bolts, per head.

LS has 15

BBC has 16

And the lowly small block chebby has 17.

PSD (IH) 7.3 has 18.

Which has more clamping force?

Olds and Fords would need to be studded at a lower HP level.

I think you've proven a second hand motor and 16 bottles of N2O.  :o

I'd be a lot more concerned about the main studs and rods. Head studs would be a good idea, but not a necessity at 150 shot... If you plan on going up... I'd at least go with the arp head bolts.

The Ford 385 series do not suffer from lack of clamping... Even at 10 head bolts, you're dealing with 9/16 bolts at pretty decent spacing... And typically torqued to 130-140ft/lbs. Head gasket failurs, that I have found, can be often attributed to not flat sufaces, extreme detonation, or cheap head gaskets... All of which wouldn't matter how many bolts you used.
