heads help please

I'm sure ill get bashed for this but I bought a set of heads from a guy on eBay (

I know) my dad has one of his 496 bbc "crate engines" in his Chevelle and its treated him well over the past few years and I've been to his shop so I thought what the hell its been a while but he seemed like a good guy. The heads are bbc rectangle port heads 320cc runners with 115cc open chambers and are supposedly pro comp but when I got them they aren't what was shown in the auction, they have a different exhaust port shape and the shape of the flange is different they also have no markings which help me to identify what brand they are etc.. I had talked to the guy a couple of times and seem to be getting different answers and this last time he told me that the heads are a copy of a dart head which I don't believe. I don't mean to bash this guy in any way I'm simply looking for a bit of help identifying them. I don't have any pictures of the heads at the moment and I could be way wrong about what's going on but was wondering if anyone could identify what heads these are or have had any dealings with this individual before.

I don't want you to take this the wrong way......

You have an extremely nice matching set of bookends there.

Those will be Chinese castings, the name branding on them is pretty much irrelevant, I would take the "lesson learned, move on" approach.

There is a reason there is no name on them. The Chinese foundries make poor copies of existing heads, mass produce them with sub-par materials and sell them for about half of what you could buy the real deal for.

Grab a Brodix head.
Grab an AFR,
Grab an Edlebrock.

The differences are scary. Ever notice, these brands have their name all over them? Ever wonder why? I call it pride and advertizing.

Sorry you got taken, but I would install those on a 300 HP car motor, nothing more. I give them an hour on a hard running jet. Max.

Thank you GT jets for the reply, that's what I was some what thinking, better to spend a grand or so more than be down another season with even more $$ down the drain. The more I look into it the more I see the same head being sold as being something else.

There is a dude on here selling a virtually brand new set of Edlebrock Performers for not too much dough. Might check it out.

IMHO, a pretty good deal, you will spend over $2k if you ordered them. I have been chewing on it, but I am just not ready yet. If they are still there in March, they will be mine, all mine (My Birthday LOL)...

I didnt use pay pal which should have been the first red flag

but I have all the paper work and proof of the order and proof of payment so will see what ebay says. Hopefully get my money back and look at a good entry level set of heads since this isn't a big build

I know this is a little bit off topic, but related..

If you look at the second posting with the pictures of the heads you are pretty sure you received, they state in the description that they have Manley valves.

Anybody who has ever had a Manley valve in their hands, knows that those are NOT Manley....... Not even close.

Likely, Chinese Knock offs.

Predatory marketing, buy your parts from a reputable supplier, spend a little more of your hard earned cash and sleep like a baby at night.

If you really sit down and figure it out, the cost difference really isn't that much. You have to pro rate things though. Meaning if they last three times longer, does that not make them worth three times the cost?

I once bought an SFI harmonic balancer of eBay, had a nice big SFI sticker on it... Turns out it was a repackaged Pioneer stock replacement. Still had the part number stamped into it... They got that one back.

I don't do eBay much anymore, unless I know exactly what I'm getting. I have had people sign parts and send me a picture before they ship it. I can compare the signature when it gets there... Seems stupid, but have had two people not want to do it. What does that well you?

I couldn't agree more with you GT after this learning experience for me. We're going to probably be going with an entry level eddy head since it's not a race boat more of a family cruiser that he likes to get in it hear and their and googoof of in at the lake. After looking back it's about 800$ to a 1000$ more but we won't be worried about blowing a head and being back at square one all over again.

Little bit of an update, since I sent a personal check ebay won't cover my purchase even though I have emails between me and the seller showing him requesting a check ect. If the seller will accept a return I'll eat 180$ for shipping or I may have to take him to court if possible to get my money back

Yeah shit happens and that's one mistake I won't make again. And trust me I'm considering it, I don't want to off the heads to get my money back and someone else have to deal with shit heads

Another small update to the situation for those that want to know, I contacted the seller through eBay and explained that I wanted to return the heads for a refund, he argued and what not and still tried to tell me that the heads are imitations of dart little m heads which I Google and found nothing on them eventually he got mad and agreed to let me return the heads for a full refund but will see.

You helped out alot. I'm pretty sure the guy is full of $#!@ and was just blowing smoke. I did a bit more digging and they look like the promaxx head. I don't know if their the same but they do look similar.

Glad you think I have help out. Not sure where you are located but there is a lot of guys on this site with parts or hook ups. You will never regret quality parts take your time and do it once. Reach out and plenty of guys on here will help they may bust your balls every now and then but all worth it.

Thanks maker. I figured the guy was full of bs all I saw was sbc blocks. On a side note after all this were going to run the stock heads and just gasket match them. Is it a bad idea to make the exhaust ports round instead of leaving them square? Sorry for the newb question.

The transition from the head into the header at the flange is critical to flow. Most likely, it would be best to not match the exhaust and to have an intentional mismatch to help prevent reversion by having the smaller port in the head exit into a larger port in the header.

There is some pretty good porting advice in the book How to Hot Rod Big Block Chevy. The best advice is don't learn to port on a head that you don't intend to scrap. It is really easy to hurt flow by grinding in the wrong area.
