Thanks for the advice flusher. will just run the heads as is, he wants the engine running asap so we can tune and get it set up and running right before summer. ill have to get that book and check it out, porting seems pretty interesting but definitely expensive to do it right since you need some sort of a flow bench set up.

thanks again for the info guys

I had an opportunity to work on David Vizard's flow bench once.  I found all kinds of ways to kill flow on an SBC Vortec head.  After sacrificing two sets of heads to the flow gods, I was finely able to gain 30ish CFM with a 2.080 intake valve.  Ultimately, I had a porting shop do yet again another set of the same heads and they were able to getabout 40ish CFM with a 2.055 intake valve.

The important thing I saw is that the heads that I did, the port stalled about .500 valve lift.  The heads that I had done professionally carried the flow all the way to .650 valve lift AND the low and mid lift numbers were up everywhere.  It is unrealistic to believe that you will be able to port your own heads, even with all of the right tools, and see a noticeable difference in HP.

Cheers,

Joe
