He switched to points? Wonder why. Maybe he had a nice dizzy and took it before he sold it. At the very least you could just run wires back laying on the seat to verify no wires are open/cut. Should be just 3 wires-I believe ground, positive, and signal from the distributer. Fuel gauge dont work? Does anyones? No serious seems a lot are broke I was give'en a stick and was told here's the fuel gauge.

ok there a way to test the gauge and then test the sending unit. theres nothing really wrong with points but .....  get something else. the tach may or may not work replace it. you are just going to have to take your time looking at everything, before you take it out!!!!!!!!!!!!   google search how test gauge and sending unit, it should give a really good explanation. congrats on the new boat please be safe above all else !!!

Not trying to be a smart ass here but who really needs a tach?   When it stops pulling, take your foot out of it.  Worry about it down the line when you want to assess the condition of the pump or figure out your speed without a GPS.   Now a working gas gauge unless you are always going upriver is another matter . . .

Thanks for the replies....the boat is all original.it would be nice to know what's it is revin to, isn't it good to have a tach  if your loosing motor performance? I will google how to check senders.he just changed it from single to duel points.

to test a fuel gauge you need a potentiometer.  the gauge works off of resistance.  from 30 ohms to 240 ohms in most cases.  radio shark or frys will have one and you just hook it up to the sender wire and ground.  turn the dial back and forth and the gauge should move.  if the senders are bad, they're like $30 for new ones and they just drop right in.  you might have to pull the tank out a bit to get enough room.

that being said, make sure your tanks are grounded.  both for the gauge reading AND for safety.  especially your fuel fills.  there should be a small ground from the battery/motor to the tanks sender (you can attach it to the screws that hold the sender in, and then from the sender to the fuel fill.  reason being if its not grounded when you go to fill up the tank it touches the fuel nozzle it could spark and that would be bad. especially if your tanks are touching carpet.  all that foot rubbing creates tons of static electricity.

as far as the tach with points?  ditch that crap and slap a HEI in it.  u can get a "billet" hei distributor for like $40 with coil and it'll work all day long.  hook your tach sender wire and an ignition 12v and bam, done deal go boating!

I just ditched my points and went HEI, but I had to change my factory wiring a little. The power wire to the HEI wasnt up to the task so I just added a relay, the original power wire now just energizes the relay so the HEI gets direct battery power, if HEI are low on power it'll burn out the module. If you need to know how to wire it let me know I'll give you connect the dot wiring map-easy.

*MOST* fuel gauges are 33-240 ohms.  before you buy make sure yours matches.
