help pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaase
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:55:28 PM »
ok, i am/was planning on forkedups first trip to the water (running, in the 3 yrs) being this friday, i have a 1/2 day at work, so i need to set total timing, install drive shaft and splash shield, fill with gas. got home tonight, pulled it out of the garage, fired her up and........no oil pressure, zilch, nada, nothing, zero, gauge didn't even pretend to move, turned it off and shit my pants, ok clean pants and think about this for a minute, used to have oil pressure right?,   i cannot 100% say so, i do not remember 100% checking the gauge, i checked the top end, removed valve cover and had oil (then) started it once again, maybe just bled off, ran for about 30 seconds and nothing still, checked oil level, good, oil looks good, nice and clean, check connection at sending unit, seems tight, ground wire to sending unit, gauge pegs at 100, run to checker and buy a new sending unit, install and go to start motor, once key is turned to run position the oil pressure gauge pegs at 100 and stays there. start motor and pressure drops to 25psi, so i have some sort of pressure. no matter what rpm i put the motor at the pressure stays at 25, wtf, i know it has a high pressure pump in it, but it has been three years since it has run, what should i do next, this is freakin me out, i do have 10hrs on this motor with no trouble, stored inside and covered, sealed while paint was being done, flushed oil 3 times before initial start up, running 20w50 mobil 1 right now, getting ready to change again till this happened, using gaffrig gauges, what am i missing, please help my dumb ass :banghead:  ;D

please help my third baby ;D

Also make sure the sender is correct for the gauge.  I had the exact same problem with mine.  First they sent me home with a an idiot light sender which looked the same as the second time they sent me home with an OEM sender, still nothing until I bought a sender for a gauge they sold ( I finally got a guy who knew this was likely the problem and said this one might work for my gauge)  Seems to be working now, but I still want a mechanical before I run it with the new set up.

X2 ! Winner, ding! ding! ding!   :D

You need a sender for a gauge, not a sender for a idiot light.  ;)

i watched the computer as the guy looked up the parts, he did first try to sell me one for a light, but i corrected him and we looked up one for a gauge, however it is/was inteded for a 75 k20 chevy p/u, 454 with a gauge (that was the only one he could find), should i call jbp or rex mar and find  a sender for the gaffrig gauge?

A lot of factory gauge's sending units act very similar to a sending unit for a idiot light. Most of those factory "gauges" are not accurate at all. You need a sending unit for an aftermarket gauge. Your aftermarket gauge will have a aftermarket sending unit available for it. Kragen's or similar should have them for AutoMeter gauges. I would not buy a ? GM sending unit for your aftermarket gauge (unless it's a fuel gauge, then buy a GM sending unit  ;) ).

I use both types on my motor the pressure at motor. Electric at dash, can see both that way I know they are both rite. The sender has to be the rite one for the gauge or it wont work rite. and the wire
size should be rite  from sender to gauge per instrustions , I run solid wire sender to gauge same with temp gauge and tach,  no loas that way :banghead:

installed the manual gauge tonight, need to make a permanent bracket for it, but it is good for now, once started jumped to 65psi almost imediately (sp), what a relief, hopefully the new electric sender will be here friday and i can wrap it up friday afternoon and possilbly still make it to the lake, thanks for the input and setting me straight ;D
