high cooling water psi

Ran my first jet boat for first time today, its a 74 chalenger with 455 olds-jaccuzzi drive. Runs good but anytime i hit full throttle the cooling lines from jet pump blow off or water psi is so high it spray out of pump cover gasket. I notice a valve at back of boat near inlet. Is that to control flow and maybe turn it down a little of is there some sort of regulator I should get. Thanks josh

theres 2 things, flow and pressure. if you turn the valve to close the water FLOW, you'll still have pressure. to get things 100% correct you need have a pressure regulator, and THEN a gate valve.

you're lucky that you havent blown headgaskets or anything else with such high pressures.

Had a olds before....be careful where you set the water valve at. I had mine set at about 180-200 degrees(water temp). To much water flow in a olds will crack a head. Had that happen with my valve open to far.

If the hose is clamped at the inlet side leading to the engine from the pump, I'm having a hard time beleiving it'd blow the hose off, first of all!

What pump is this? Sounds to me that it's probably a Jacuzzi YJ or a Golden Eagle. Gotta be something seriously plugging the bowl or wedged in the nozzle. plastic shopping bags, something......have you pulled the hand hole cover, and new gasket BTW, that you say was spurting water?

No way should that kind of pressure be coming out that 1/2" pipe tapped into the bowl for engine cooling. FIX the problem, don't band-aid the result........

I'm a fan of pressure releif, since we run much hotter engines, cams these days, and build our pumps to much higher standards than they did in the 70's and 80's, but still, there is NO WAY that pump should even be capable of throwing that kind of pressure through that tube unless something is seriously wrong in the bowl or nozzle area.

It is a jaccuzzi, yj I believe and I was supprised too at the amount of pressure it spit out at wot. I didnt notice anything pluging jet even took a look through the access plate inside of boat and everything looked ok to me. Will deff be adding relief valve and have to take a closer look at everything befor running again. And also as far as adding an ajustable temp valve mine has none that I know of....would that go on top of intake manifold?

eh just keep an eye on it with the gate valve and temp gauge for now and enjoy your summer.

Ok sounds great! Thanks again for all the help. Im a motor guy and a boat guy but new to the jet boats and learning there a diff monster so I really appreciate all the input and will get some pics ou as soon as possible. Just orderd valve and new gauge kit from hardin hope to get in this weekend. Need a new steering cable yet and shes done!

if you're ordering a teleflex rack and pinion cable, u can get the whole kit with new steering helm for like $10 more. they didnt have my length in stock so it took about a week and a half to get it.

i have the hardin white gauges in mine as well. great deal from cpperformance for the set.

I think the pressure gauge is as important as the valve it self. You need to see where you are and where you are going when you increase RPMS.

Two much flow and you will crack your heads...Set it at 180-200 degrees...but if you want to be retarted open it all the way and take that chance.

Hey TJSNordic, what is the line that looks like a -6 between the sand strainer ? and the the pressure relief valve,
is that the line to your headers ? or ?, just wondering out loud.

That is a number -8 which fed my banderlog valve.

Well may have spoke too soon, I added the psi valve from hardin and works great. Also replaces blown water pump cover seal and flushed oil pan and filled with fresh oil. After a short run im still getting alot of h2o in the oil so thinking my head gaskets shot. Running dry exaust at the moment and not burning any thing or steaming out of pipes but water must be getting in somewhere along the line. And recomenddations on replacement gasket? Runing iron heads stock compression block was just decked and magnafluxed so should be legit there.

Check the intake manifold gasket before you get going too far. 9 chances out of 10, its the intake manifold gasket causing milkshakes on the 455. Don't use the "bathtub"" style, use the Fel-Pro Print-o-seals. Throw out the end seals, use a nice bead of clear silicone on the ends. Wipe some of the silicone with your finger around the water ports on the head, intake and both sides of the gasket, and gaska-cinch the same way around the intake ports on the head, intake and both sides of the gasket when you install.
