Ignition

I still need to get my ignition and was considering this http://www.kmjent.com/cart/product.php?productid=352&cat=7137406&page=2 verses a MSD mainly because of price. Any opinions on this would be helpful !

I just got this HEI Distributor and Wires (KMJ 6001DWIREKIT) from them for $99 delivered.

I would lean more toward the HEI setup like 77GT is talking about. It simplifies the hookup for one, cleans up the wiring, and parts are available EVERYWHERE. If your running a tunnel ram I dont think it would work though.

ignition is something you do not want to skimp out on! if your on a tight budget i would get a petronix unit and put it in a stock dizzy!

That one is a Pro Comp knock off of an MSD.

We tried a couple of brand new Pro Comp HEI ignitions (also may be what KMJ is selling, I have not checked). One of the units was DOA, even though it was picked up directly at the Pro Comp warehouse, and the other only had the roll pin part way through the distributor gear because the holes were out of alignment. In trying to pick up a substitute HEI, I called Herbert and they stated that 50% of the Pro Comp HEI ignitions were bad at the time of sale. For that reason, I will no longer try to use their ignition, even though we had previous success with one in the dirt track car.

77GT I assume seeing how you just got yours you hav'nt used it yet or if so have you had any problems with it ?

Gregb, no t ram just a highrise. Is your dizzy mech advance ?

Nordie, thanks I'll check out the petonix, budgets a little tight but im willing to splurge a liitle for quality, like they say you get what you pay for.

First time I have heard of problems with the ProComp products. Same as the Jegs & Summit house brands. I'll find out if it works when I am able to run the engine.

not like msd's products are much better. they're notorious for dying for various reasons... vibration, heat, moisture. i see some people mount theirs near the back and i just cringe. my last mustang i had gone thru 3 6a's before mounting it inside the car under my seat to the carpet. so no heat no vibrations no moisture. it lasted 6 months before it died as well. and a dead ignition = you're going nowhere. if yer not lookin for a racer just stick to the HEI. bulletproof and easy to fix.

Hey I have a MSD all in one marine dizzy, have had it for 4 years now, if not more. And never one problem, even with the few soakings it has received

Nordie, what makes it better suited for a car? Is it mech advance or vacume? what ya asking for it $$$?

got one of these in my nordic, no trouble as of yet..... but i am not racing, rarely goes over 4k

been running this in my liberty about 5 years and it is the most reliable thing i have ever used... only down side it does'nt have a rev limiter

You are right Ralph, but I also have an A&D built engine, and I have only had a couple of times that I came outta the water and was smart enough to let go of the go pedal,

probably close to grenading but didn't happen

I've had zero problems with Mallory Unilites. Though I run them with Hyfire 6AL boxes and Procoils. MSD HEI that was on one boat gave me similar fits that left a bad taste in my mouth for HEI systems back when GM first came out with them. It's since been replaced with a Unilite/6AL/Procoil setup........although I DID run a Vertex Mag on it for a bit first, just for chits and giggles.....

That MSD dizzy's still floating around here somewhere..........wheel chock as far as I'm concerned........
