newb carb question****** PICS UP
« on: April 21, 2011, 07:05:59 PM »
hello everyone, just signed up and would appreciate some help.

first off, i have a 1984 advantage jet boat, its a rogers knock off in yellow mostly with blue and a few shades of red through orange.

its a berkeley 2JE A jet drive

running the contraption is a 1983 454 chevy, with i believe small oval headers, and an RV cam. through hull headers, i have a crappy car distributor in it for now, but i have a mallory distributor that will go in once i figure out if it works etc etc. alternator was rebuilt as is the starter. this brings me to my question.

basically i dont know much about carbs. what use to be on top was a holley. i cant remember if its a 650 or 750 cfm or what. on the black sticker where i would assume the model number goes is scratched off.

the marking i can find on it is underneath where the butterfly's? are which is "11508" and on the actual butterfly's it has the number "172" on each of them. on the throttle side it says "P 36" looking at it from the top inside where the gasket is i can see "6R 8026"  and thats about it.

and so my question is that i would appreciate any info on what kind of carb it is as i know this carb will run the boat and or what i should look at for this set up. im not trying to go fast (yet :D) im just looking to get back on the water. (been sitting for a number of years, last year we finally got the engine to light up and the carb was leaking all over and light up on fire)

im looking for a used carb, (on a student budget) i would like to know the difference with a "double pumper" and "accellerater" as thats what i'v been able to find in my search. thanks for all the help and sorry if i bored you to death :X

i'll try and see if i could get some pics of it up so you can see the mess im playing with :D

On an unmodified Holley carb, the "list" number is on the choke horn.

For a mild 454,, 750 CFM is probably the correct choice.  Yours is not rebuildable?

well, the choke horn (after looking up what that was D:) is bent inward, and the butterfly's up top wont shut.

the "list" number on them that i can see is

3310-10

The 3310-10 is a 750cfm vacuum secondary carb and should be perfect for your application. the bent choke horn has me scratching my head  :sly:.....if possible post a pic of the carb shot from the top and see if someone here can advise you a solution.

Your "butterfly's up top" is actually a single choke butterfly,, correct?  That can usually be removed,, but I am from Southern California,, no real need for a choke to start an engine here.

Let me suggest that you have someone who knows carbs better than you take a look at that one and tell you if it's worth rebuilding or not.  Holley carbs are reasonably easy to work on, and for a mild engine the vacuum secondaries are not really going to hamper you at all, and may increase fuel economy some, as it was designed to do.

so i started looking around online and ended up going to my local auto parts place who forwareded me to http://www.carbsonly.com/ carlos there said the main body is no good, and also the primary fuel bowl. showed me another main body he had laying around for $60, said the rebuild kit was around $35.

sounds fair to me at this point. but then i asked him if i could just clean the carb with carb cleaner and a toothbrush or something he said i would run into problems ( the carbs been sitting under a tarp and boat cover for about 4-5 years now)

I asked what he would suggest and he said they do a hot tank drop and shake the dirt/grim off, which would run around $80 ( i'll have picture of it up on monday my brothers going to loan me his camera). so that brings me to about $175. i asked how much he would charge to rebuild it with the hot tank wash treatment and he quoted me $230.

im think i want to rebuild it myself so that way i can tune it out on the lake etc etc

about the single choke butterfly being removed, i also live in southern california, can i really run the carb with out it?
about the primary fuel bowl being bad, it has a leak on the top screw, it was nicked pretty bad but i think a new screw and washer would get me on the water for now.

once again thanks for the help i really do appreciate it, you guys are helping me get back on the water!!!!!

i think getting a new double pump is out of my price range. i'm happy with the 53mph gps i'v seen on it on elsinore way back when it was actually running :D

With the money you are getting quoted on that one, might be reasonable to replace it.  A guy that I build dirt track race engines for just bought a good used ready to run 750 double pump carb for his race car for $250.

You absolutely don't need the choke, most "performance" carbs don't even  have them,, they just interrupt airflow.

Also,, a different carb probably will not increase your speed noticeably,, or perhaps not at all.

I think I have a couple of 750 vacuum secondary carbs here, probably would need a kit since they have been sitting, but should both be completely usable besides that if you want to rebuild one yourself.

for that price id just find one thats in working order and not deal with it.

you're in socal, i urge you to check out the high performance swapmeet here in long beach.  theres guys who have rebuilt carbs ready to go, both with and without chokes/horns.

http://www.toppingevents.com/ecology_meet.asp

i purchased my 650 demon for $150 and it was spotless and works great!

the choke horn is bent.  i would just unbolt the choke mechanism on the side, and remove the shaft/blade.  then take a pair of channel locks and bend the horn back straight.  chokes are pretty useless around here.

that thing was dropped...you can have the chock horn milled off, and the primary bowl is toast as well!!!! That thing would goto the spare parts pile, and i would start fresh with another carb...you can find nice used 750 double pumpers from 100-200 bones!

That's called the "metering plate".  The gold colored "button" in the center is actually the power valve, and it is threaded in from the opposite side.

At the top of the metering plate there are two indentations,, carefully use a screwdriver in them to pry it off(it should come off reasonably easily)  Resist any urges to put a screwdriver between the metering plate and main body.

i was able to get the metering plate off without sticking a screwdriver between it and the body. it was stuck on there pretty good

so i went by that shop today and picked up a main body, primary fuel bowl and holley "TricKit" rebuild kit.

looks like i still need a accel. pump diaphragm assembly, a torque wrench and my brothers spark plug gap guages to check the clearance between the retainer bar and check ball under the primary bowl :D

i'll get some pictures probley tomorrow before i start peicing everything back together.

any other tips before i start putting this back together?

carlos who sold me the rebuild kit told me to use grease on the rubber washer thats on the fuel inlet valve

thanks for the help guys i appreciate it
