Making BBC stronger or not .
« on: September 18, 2008, 07:15:21 PM »
Some street racer comes over to my unit and we start telling stories . The subject of engine blocks comes up and he tells me to buy the 2 bolt main blocks because when you convert it over to a 4 bolt using the angled main caps it makes it stronger . Anyone heard of this .

I have a splayed billet kit in my BBC, sure looks impressive, the idea is that the load is distributed accross the entire bottom of the block, problem is, hard to prove if its actually stronger than a factory four-bolt, seems like a good idea, this motor was origionally built to have an 8-71 huffer, but the dude ran out of money, I sold off the dished pistons and heads (alum Brodix) and built a 10:1 5000 RPM cruiser, I seriously doubt I could ever kill this block.

These kits make a 2 bolt stronger than a stock 4 bolt because they are at a angle and go into the (meatier) thicker part of the bottom end. Moroso makes a nice kit that I will be using on my BBC

this interesting, because i read an article in super chevy...basically what it came down to is they got a 2 bolt standard bore block SBC, and decided what it would take to gernade it...they pulled the motor from a junk yard put an intake, cam lifters, and 4 barrel holley...then they got a shit load of nitrous and kept progressing it on the dyno...the lower end held up to like 702HP before it finally went...pretty cool article

That's awsome, BTW there is more material in a two bolt block than a four (the block is more machined to fit the larger main caps), another reason they say the get a lot stronger with a splay kit, it depends on the quality of the machine work also...IMO.

 ;D

The splaid bolts are stronger  - the best is 90 degree's bolts, but you all don't have a block to bolt that through so the more angle the better...

Talked with my machine shop about this and was told that it does make it very strong,  even stronger that a 4 bolt.  BUT, it aint cheap and by the time you invest in a conversion kit and the machine work to perform it, you might as well sell the block and invest in a good 4 bolt aftermarket block.  I think he was quoting around 900-1000 for the complete job.   Still might be a good option if you have a fresh block and really want to throw some power at it.

At what point would you consider this instead of just studding the bottom end? I built an 11:1 468 with t-ram on a 2 bolt and the machinist told me don't even bother with the 4.  He must have known something becasue it spun a Berk B to 6200 in a 19 CP and that was in 1996.  Motor still runs fine today....  (at least as of last year when I saw the boat in GSM)

I think it's safe to say that a 2 bolt converted to a 4 would be more $ that finding a stock 4 bolt. I've heard a properly prepped stock 4 bolt is good to 1000 hp or so. If you are going past that well... I dunno. As far as a studded 2 bolt.... the way it was explained to me is that it's different in a boat than say a car, in that the motor isn't getting shocked or loaded and unloaded, like dropping a clutch. So a studded 2 bolt should be good to 700 or so with out worring about cap walk. My .02 prolly no one cares.lol   Carry on.

Makes sense,  I estimated the hp in that motor around 600-650, and obviously with 10 years on it I'd say it's ok.   Omar, your point is taken,  but that cost was just the cost of the conversion, not line boring, lifter index, sonick check, etc.  At some point, at least IMO, it pays to start with a solid foundation.  The way I see it, if you're building enough HP to warrant a 4 bolt conversion,  the extra amount for the new block is probably not that much in the grand scheme of things...  I realize of course, that that quote could be high and maybe there is somebody out there that will do it cheaper.

If I was just lookin to get the best bang for my and had the money to just pick and choose . Well the aftermarket block would be my choice . My main reason for picking up an aftermarket block would be for the bore size and not for the strength . Quite frankly I personally cant afford to build anything that would destroy a GM 2-4 bolt converted or otherwise . It takes alot of scratch to produces anything that would , so I dont really think that building 1000 on a GM block is the best money spent .
