Marine starters and alternators

Are marine starters and alternators worth putting in a boat? If so where is a good place to buy them?

Loaded question.

Is not a matter of "worth it". But rather a matter of being required to insure the safety of your family and friends.

Marine components are in existence for closed engine compartment installations. They prevent fuel vapors from being ignited due to sparks/arcs on electrical components causing an explosion and/or fire.

On an open engine application, it's less of an issue, but still not an all together horrible idea.

Some good knowledge to keep in mind I had a closed engine bay on my last boat and nothing was marine I never took it out on the water though. Luckily

I want to upgrade my amps on my alternator. How do I know what is a good amperage to upgrade to?

What does it have now?

The 63 amp 10SI Alternator was standard on a bunch of boats. You can double it pretty easy with a 120 amp.

I always use a 6.2 diesel pulley to slow the alternator down somewhat. I have a 63a on mine and works fine.

The wiring needs to be upgraded to get full benefit from a 120a unit.

I'm not sure what it has now. It's a 1986 BBC. I'm going to be adding a second battery. I'm just wondering if I should upgrade it or not.

Pull the alternator, and on the case, it is stamped how is was originally built. 42a, 55a, 63a etc. That probably all your gonna find out about you existing alt.

63a should be fine for 2 batteries.

Post pics of the back- Is it a marine Alt.?

I've used the 'marine' spark arrester from one alt to another. 4 screws- 5 minutes and you're done.
