Motor took a poopoo
« on: May 06, 2014, 08:59:24 AM »
So I was out at Camp Far West, making a couple passes with my dad and then all of a sudden the engine just literally turns itself off.  No warning prior, just STOPPED.  Every time I turn the key, it just clicks.  The engine is locked up.  Pulled the plugs and found one of them like this.

Am I totally screwed or totally screwed?  Havent dug too deep into this yet.  Just wanted to hear some opinions.

So have had roughly 50 different opinions:
Dropped valve?
Connecting Rod?
Hydrolock?
It's a Ford?

Here is where I stand now:
I manually turned the engine, probably ten good cranks and it moved freely and smoothly.  That was at least promising since it seemed locked up while at the lake.  Took off the valve covers and everything looked clean and stable.  Took off the rocker arms to see if there was any play in the valves/springs and they were all solid.  All pushrods looked perfect.  Oil was still perfect and at the right level, so I am doubting any form of water.  Trying to start simple before I really tear it down.

Any other words of wisdom?

Just take the damn thing apart! Your not gonna fix or find anything by just looking at it. Tear the intake and heads off and have a look-see and take some pics.

Nope. Put in on an engine stand and rip her apart. Get the pan off. That is the tell all.

Your approach is like staring at a babies ass waiting for it to shit. Do yourself a favor at least pull it removr the oil pan and take a look then pull intake off and decide if you should keep going from there..

Keep the engine together/properly assembled and in the boat, remove all the spark plugs, then check cylinder compression on all 8 cylinders with a compression gauge.  Should you find a bad cylinder, start by removing that head first and see just what you've got....

Bummer.

Are the exhaust valves in your heads OEM or replacement valves? The OEM exhaust valves are two-piece and break off about where yours seems to have broken.

The pistons look like KB138's (or KB206's). If so, then they are required to have an unusually wide top ring end gap of about 0.035" in your engine application, not the more typical end gap of almost half that.  Many builders miss this or think the end gap called for by KB is ridiculous, dismiss it, and gap the rings in typical fashion; the result of doing that is what you see in your engine.  I am not necessarily saying this is why you had an engine failure...it's just an FYI.  During disassembly, measure the top ring end gap of the other 7 top rings in their respective bores to get an idea of how end gap was set.

Of course, if the pistons are not KB hypers, then none of this info about the top ring end gap applies.

LO

P.S.: This is not a bash on hyper pistons and in fact the KB Hypers are excellent pistons when set up correctly.

Just pull that one piston ,rod, lifters, pushrods and rockers out and run it rest of season.   I pretzeted a set of push rods on one cylinder and ran the boat all weekend with a slight miss
