What kind of rpm's.
Most 21's should get to at least 50 mph.
What hull is it again?
Whats the altitude of Silverwood?

Here's a check list for ya. Not neccisarily in any order...

Ignition timing.  ;)

Carb. linkage (wot?)  ;)

Secondaries in the carb working fuel wise?  :-\

Cam timing.  :-\

Dead cat or something in the pump?  :P

Gonna be something fairly easy to find IMO, our Spectra 20 did just a tick over 60 with a 455 Olds, Berkeley pump and a diverter.

You need to lower the floor LOL. ;D

Reverse gate opening 100% ?

It almost sounds like the boat is heavy, Water?

I had the engine timed and the carb rebuilt we ran it and to check if everything was working correctly....the dead cat could be an issue !!  ;D  also I just had a droop and diverter put on !! reverse gate?? whats this?? I didnt take on any water hardly at all on this run water was like glass I assume because it was 50 degrees  :sly:

Soonerfan, don't take this the wrong way, but not sure a droop will help on a 21' boat, maybe...
The reverse gate is the cover over the diverter, if it hangs below the outlet it will hamper the boats speed....Big Time...

How high was the rooster? too much diverter will do goofy stuff too. I would think the boat should be in the high 40's at 3500+/- feet altitude...

Testing at silver wood is not the best test and tune because of the altitude less air, between silver wood and Elsinore gained 7mph@ Elsinore if the boat is not trimmed right you will lose mph, just my o2.

dumb question but have you verified you are actually getting full throttle, i know when i put mine together everything seemed fine working the carbs by hand, but as soon as i used the gas pedal i was only getting about 75% throttle. quick adjustment and problem solved.

I wanted the diverter put on and the guy put on the droop and diverter for the same price .. I will DEFINETLY check the reverse gate and see if Im getting full throttle!! The rooster was a good 25 feet high and about 100 feet long Id say  ;D

It almost sounds like the boat is heavy, Water?

GT

What GT is talking about here is if the boat is heavy due to excessive water saturation of the foam or wood under the floor.

There is a thread with a bunch of pics showing the crap that can be wet under the floor (if I can find it I'll post the link)

If the roost was more than say 6' high, the rest is not real conducive to top speed, especially on a 21' boat...with the droop, you're trying to lift too much ass end (where have I heard that before?  :sly: ) out of the water...it makes the hull "plow" and will really lower the performance, luckily it's not difficult to change stuff around, I would see if you could borrow some different attatchments and play around with the setup..

I'd like to see a pic of the pump if not too much of a pain in the arse. :-\

How can you tell if the under floor is wet ?? and how do you stop it if thats the issue??  :sly:

One day many, many years ago I was puttering around on my boat in the driveway and looked closely at the floor (I have a false floor over the top of the stringers). I noticed what seemed like white spidery mold under the resin and cloth. So I took either a spade wood drill bit or a small hole saw and made a small "core sample" of the floor. Soppin wet with little critters crawlin around (boat aliens I guess).  :screwy:

I probably should have yanked anything I could off the boat and hauled the hull to the dump. But instead I decided to "redo" everything. When I cut out the stringers they weighed about 100lbs each (full of water) and the flotation foam was another 200lbs of water. Tearin out was fast and easy. Putting it back together just took another 11 years.... :banghead:  :banghead:

Most likely your slow speed is something other than evil water in the hull. GT's got a good list of the likely suspects for you. He's even got a great story about some ski rope instead of a dead cat in the pump...

SoonerFan, I like that "half snoot", not sure if it's a good fit for a 21 though, looks like a pretty sweet setup. Tom (JBP) will probably chime in soon, but I'm thinking that snoot may be hurting you, I have only had good luck with snoots on really light "flighty" hulls, on the other hand I have heard folks having good luck on larger boats, just not me..

I would do some more testing and maybe as a shot in the dark have it weighed. Also as Stevecat says, make sure there isn't 200' of rope around the impeller shaft LMAO.

It has been my experience (but never my fault) that even 6 feet of rope will result in an engine speed of 4 grand and a forward speed of appox. 1 mph.    Gotta luv the usually easy fix.

So what your saying is that if I see a piece of rope hanging out my water intake like a tampon string I know what the prob is huh  :sly: On another note I went out and tested the reverse gate and its completely clear of the outlet !! I have this weird feeling its the carb linkage... I'll take a look at it tomorrow

Ya, Glasscutter is right, even a duck turd in the impeller will drop the boat speed to nuthin. You probably don't have anything inside the pump that's not supposed to be there.

I had a fist full of weeds in the pump and my Hallett 21 (which is a tank) and it didnt want to do a thing .
Mashed the gas and it felt like it was in neutral .
Idled around fine.
Maybe rocks in the bowl too.

With only one rock inside the grate it would idle and move around great with no throttle but as soon as it hit 3000 rpm it would start to vibrate.

There is NO WAY you should see only 30mph!  Check your throttle linkage and make sure the primary/secondaries are opening.  If your primary isn't opening all the way and not enough vacuum for the secondaries -you're at less than half throttle.   With just your primaries you should see more than 30 or 40.  Look under your intake, maybe there a rope.  Check the weep hole -maybe there's a elephant jammed in the there???

A little perspective:  My 25 Euro, stock 454, ,4 people and easily another 400# of gear and gas will do 50.
