I have a Jacobs running a Mallory dis. and its crazy good.. And I also have a street fire msd hei have only replaced the mod once.. There both really good and most people will say they like msd better.(and don't know why). I think there a little under powered for what they claim. But not anything your going to notice on a mild built BB..
-
I have mallory on my hondo and it fires up first time everytime. And I like it because it's not msd lol.
-
MSD is sweet..have it on my drag car and on my boat..vibration gets to it every so often and could have to short the box to reset the system...only my personal experience since i live on a dirt road..not saying this will happen to you..but thats what MSD told me.
i mounted the box in the camaro on rubber mounts and have never had this issue again..im interested to see what im in for on my MSD7 on the boat.
have friends who swear by the Mallory..both seem to be a great unit. whichever you choose will be fine im sure. just wanted to share my .02
-
thanks .....i just dont wanna go cheap....cheap is cheap....MSD has a kit ....coil,ballast res, wires, and dizzy...and then they have the "ready to run" .....i guess i just have 2 make my choice

Just buy an HEI set up from summit. They are like 150 bucks. Slam it in and never worry about it again.

I put an msd ready to run on my boat last summer and so far I love it
-
either one will be a great unit.i would look at the options, thats going to be the difference.
-
cool ...thanks
-
if you do go with an MSDupgrade the coil from a standard Blaster unit. it will save you headaches down the road..some may be using them with no issues but most engine issues i have had has been caused by that damn blaster coil..just because it runs doesnt mean its fine
-
yha i think i found a mallory i like ...and im gona get the right coil and stuff.. ill do some more reserch b4 i make the purchace...

If you plan on running the mallory make sure you get the power filter for it!!!!

-
ok thanks....i found 1 on mallory's site also..just wasnt sure if it was the right one  they want like 50 bucks for the same thing...
"power filter" sounds kinda like what it is.....but what dose it really do :screwy: filter the power im guessing
-
prevents power spikes from damaging the ignition module
-
The mallory's are very sensitive to power spikes. It WILL leave you stranded!
-
ohhh ok...thanks 4 the info  i didnt know that

this is what im looking at...would i still need the power filter?
-
Only if its a unilite... I have a regular mech advance unilite with the blue marine cap and power filter/ballast. Might want to have an extra module in you boat bag just in case. I have also spun the pin on my dizzy and keep an extra one of those. The cheaper unilite will work the same.

-
i always carry extra parts and a tool box full of tools... :screwy: i cant help it
but what im going 4 is dependable, and less problems. maintenance free...hahaha......
-
so ive changed my mind a little...think im going to pick up the MSD ....my ? is ....is the one at the local auto parts house gona be fine to run or do i have 2 go marine ? and other than wires and coil stuff...do i need to get anything else?
thanks
-
I prefer Mallory all the way. Been running the Mallory Comp 9000 for years & its never failed me. the only draw back is that it won't fit on a double tunnal ram.

should of posted in GT's newbie thred..... >:D

Shaa, duh... ::)
I picked one of these up a while back, gonna try it on our deck boat... http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/flame/dist/billet_marine.aspx (http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/flame/dist/billet_marine.aspx)
Looks like a nice piece to me, mechanical advance and a 2 1/2 year warranty on the electronics... Looks real purdy too, the body is actually nicer looking than my MSD Pro Billet.
If memory serves (rarely does) It was less than $200 with a 40KV coil on special from Goody's Speed Shop. 8)

thanks GT for the info
but i ran out of time and i went with MSD ...so i will see how that works for me
gota be better than my rusty old mallory that i towed 600 miles and no worky :screwy:
-
do i need to use an ignition box with this thing?
-
ok so i got evrything ...and ignition box :screwy: but when i turn the key to the start postion it cranks....then let off the start to run postion....and then it starts :sly:
any ideas what the heck that is
need some help guys tryin to get on the water
thanks
-
my buddy just told me it was the ballest res....i took it out of play cuz the dumb a** that told me i didnt need the ignition box...told me i didnt need it ....could this be the issue ?
-
I dunno about MSD, but on a Mallory system with a 6AL Hyfire, the ballast resistor is not needed/eliminated, provided you're running a compatible coil (Mallory #29440, other Mallory coils are NOT compatible with Hyfire). If running a Unilite or Magnetic Breakerless (IE- YLM Marine) without the box, then the ballast resistor IS needed regardless of coil, or you'll burn the coil up.
I would assume MSD is similar. Prolly best to make a few phone calls with the part numbers you have and hear it straight from the horses mouth though.

yha its the 6A MSD..and coil and the hole set up....hooked the ballest res back up and same dealio

You most likely have the power wire that goes to the ignition box from the key switch wired wrong, you probably connected to a 12v power wire that when you are cranking it temporarily pulls voltage away and the when you let off the key it gets 12v back, that's why it fires.
Test (with volt meter or test light ) the power wire that is going to the box from the key switch while you or a buddy cranks it over and see if the voltage drops temporarily. If it does, look on the key switch for a second 12v "out" wire or (12v in the "start" position not the "on" position) and switch the wire to that position. hope that helps!
-
yha thanks ..thats what i thought it was and changed wire and then nothing...
anyways update...i felt like i got scamed...when i ask all the ? b4 i purchesed anything !!! and the paper work in the box didnt say anything about "you must use a ignition box" nowhere!!!
so i took all of it back and got my money back!!!
no water for me
-
Dunno if it's BBC, BBF or Olds, but just bite the bullet and pick up a Mallory system. You won't be sorry. I personally like running the 6AL HyFire box, (Mal #6853M). For BBC, either the Unilite #3748201, or the YLM Magnetic Breakerless Marine, #YLM624AV, and Pro Coil #29440. BBF dizzy's are Unilite #3756701, or YLM # is YLM567EV. I'm more a fan of the YLM's in an enclosed engine compartment, otherwise the Unilite, but to each his own.
You'd have a kick ass ignition setup with that. Same part numbers work fine without the box, but you will need the ballast resistor. ;)

thank you ...Ray....and UPS ...
bad thing is....its gota go back :banghead: the wires about 1/2 in from houseing is crimped bad...i see wire....
owell finaly in the right direction....i guess
-
Jeez, how the hell did they do that????
You are seemingly absorbing bad luck from the rest of us brother! Thank you!!! ;)
Obviously, BBC from what I see. Good choice, and not going HEI !. I'm not a fan of HEI anyway in anything, (well, I MIGHT try one in a lawn mower...... ;D ) but located in the extreme top rear of a jet boat???? Yeah, good luck!! Been there and done that! (damn thing.......) You guys that are doing it, I dunno how........
Ray
-
haha .......your welcome guys ...my bad luck is good enough 4 evryone!!!
i have plenty of CL'S 4 pain killers ...
and i didnt like the HEI set up ......but i did get to cut and buff my lawn mower this weekend .... >:D
-
what a f-ing joke!!! i guess my money wasnt green enough for the first 3 guys to help me....
so the forth guy made it very easy....just return it and we will replace it... :o duhhh
i just dont get some people some times......the dam thing looked like it had been around for ever...and mabe evan installed once or twice
so they said i had 2 call mallory direct...so i did ...and guess what ...the last time they orderd that part was sept of 2011 :screwy:

I've been running a pertronix flame thrower hei for over 3 years in my chevelle. Its been wet( no fenderwells) been exposed to sun for almost a year (no hood) and has had some major vibrations (slamming the front end down) and not one problem. It went through three msd dizzy in 5 months before switching. And I picked it up for 150 ish from J&M speed center in riverside. And their customer service is great. That alone was worth the switch.
Fat fingered from the phone - Corey
-
man im sorry! sounds like you cant win. hell join the club!!!!thats what we should do form a new club.the i cant win club. socalpsd is right though hei or pertronix is a simple drop in.
-
thats the club 4 me !!! but its all good ...i just have 2 wait a week or so for the "new" one ::) thats what i thought i bought :screwy:
the funny thing is...this is the same crap i just went though (not knowing how long the part was on the shelf) and i asked them...is this a stock item...they said yes :sly:
but after speaking with mallory i now know this not 2 be true....
guess im just gona have to take my money elsewhere....
-
so update.....8 days and ups shows up.. :screwy: and this is what they replaced the crimped wire dizzy with :screwy: :banghead:
-
they sent you another one with crimped wires???? or did they just send you back the same one?
-
this ones worse!!! it been 8 days ..and they opened the box and put there packing material in and then sent it to me... :screwy:
BBB HERE I COME ...im pissed......CPPERFORMANCE!!!
-
call them/ first se what they are willing to do. this is where the free stuff comes out. when you call ask to speak to a supervisor . calmly as possible explain what has happened, and that you want this taken care of as well as something for your time that this has now waisted! and just to hit it home to that supervisor you can ask are you in the business of selling crap parts??? cause this is now twice that i have been given a part that i cannot use!
-
oh i here you 100% i,ve been on the phone with "jimmy" over there and on the phone with mallory a few times....sounds like a bunch of crap....they evan told me it was gona be drop shipped from mallory
guess what...it came from them!!! so i dont know where there getting there parts.... but they still have my money!!!
-
you talked to mallory??? wow you need a supervisor. they make decisions. and will be able to see that you are trying to resolve this.
-
yep "bob" at mallory deals with all CP's orders....its not like i cant fix it....
but 2 drop 3 bills on a part that has 2 be fixed :screwy:
the funny thing is this is not the only company i've had these kind of prob's with lately..... :banghead:
mabe it is better to buy from china :o
-
Na i would not go that far. you just got into that string of bad luck. and hell no you should never have to fix something you just bought!!! id just let them know this is the last time and if they dont get it right , your done and youll bad mouth them.
-
well here gose agin....there recording says "our hours of operation are mon ..fri 9 am to 6 pm" and sat 9am to 3 pm ....guess what they are closed :sly:
my hands are in the air ...and im effin done with them ....they got my green backs...and i got screwd :banghead: doing a charge back on my card and ill get the part for free....done
