navigation lights...

hey fellas i might be posting in the wrong forum but i saw electrical and figured id give it a shot...now ive been around boats and the water my entire life but one thing i keep noticing is most of yalls boats dont have navigation lights. Ive seen the suction cup light and that would explain the absent lights. but i dont even see pop up or flush mounted lights. i understand the clean flush look and all..but what about the legality? Do you guys with no lights at all just go in by dusk? And why not get some really clean looking SS flush mount LED "below-deck" lights? Are those types not CG approved? Do you still have to use a "topside" bow light if the "below-deck" lights are legal? Are the laws pretty much the same for CA, AZ, and NV? Oh, are boating classes required in either of those three states? sorry that one is off topic.. just wanna get all my ducks in a row..lol thanks guys!!

They been ticketing at the lower(socal). I have the suction as it retains a much cleaner look for my 99% of boating. Not sure on the above/below bow rail on light placement. I know they want your rear at a certain height and the suction one I have is far below. I have almost been pulled over till they saw it...waved me on. Been using them for 10 + years.

if you dont want to install lights at LEAST get a suction one.  if you stay out a little too late its the difference between getting a ticket or not and someone running you over.  all for what... $40?

I wouldnt have a boat without nav lights again.
I wait till all the lake lice, and guys without lights, are gone, or dark-thirty.
Its real easy to see the trailer when the marker lights are on, in the water.
I usually dont boat in a place I don't know, so I dont have a spot light either.
Last October went a 'lil too far south, and it was pitch dark at about the AVI, we launched out of the Riverside. (~15 mi)

On the trailer before dark.  Gives more time to party in the parking lot  :thumbup:

My boat didn't come with lights originally and I didn't want to start drilling on it. Figured it went unmolested for the last 40 years so why start now. I'm usually on the water early and off before dark so it's never been a issue for me. I'm that guy making wake up passes at the but crack of dawn and loading the boat usually around 3-4. Makes it easier at the ramp and gives me time to clean everything and top off the tanks for the next day or gives me a head start so I don't have to deal with the rush at the ramp.
