Need help

So I want to know if it is worth buying it's a 21 foot jet boat with a 455 the guy I might buy it from says that it's running kinda rough and that it's not putting out all the power that it needs he replaced spark plug and wires and he said that the freez plugs where leaking and that he fixed that problem but it was still running rough do u guy know what the problem could be

No sorry but it can be toooooo many things timing, fuel, flat cam, how well was motor balanced, dizzy, cap, rotor, or just motor is on its way out n maybe thats why he wants to dump it who knows. Take a compression test, bring a timing light check fuel filters check out the oil.

He said it could be the cam or the lifters is that a easy fix or an exspensive fix

Well if the boat is in good shape and u like it u can always swap it out for a 454 there are a few on Craig's and also I think one on this site for a decent price.

If the guy selling this "thinks" it might need a new cam and lifters, just plan on rebuilding the whole motor. If the cam's gone, so's a hole lot of other parts, bet on it.

He told me last night that it was running a little rough that it took it a little bit to get to 45 50 that it wasn't putting out its full potential

This will be my first jet boat I have ever owned I just wanna use it for wake boarding and tubing is it hard to fix the head gasket

Oil in the water:
water getting through a gasket, could be head gasket, intake manifold gasket or the infamous timing chain cover. If the water issue is neglected your bearings will turn like the ones in the picture. And your rods might not stay straight... If there is water getting in the oil, and it's running rough, my opinion is rebuild needed for sure.

I don't make much money and the boat is only 1600 so I figured something would be wrong with it but I don't wanna buy it if I half to replace the motor lol

I also replied to your other post. You can quickly check to see if the engine has a large capacity oil pan... If it doesn't, plan on an engine rebuild, AND additional parts that you will need to help support the oiling in the engine.

Where are you located? Seems like a far drive if you aren't in that area...

Just replacing a cam and lifters won't be cheap. The reason being if it has a flat cam, there are metal shavings everywhere in the motor, and it will ALL need to be gone through.

Figure you buy this boat, drop a grand (that's being VERY conservative) into it to make it run, you'd already have $2600 into it. Who knows what else it needs, but it'll need something. Might as well save a bit more, buy something that's turn key for around the 3K mark and go have fun.

Oil looks metallic
Rough idle
Poor performance under a load
Low compression
Failed leak down test

Easiest way is to pull valve covers, turn it over and look for a rocker arm that's not lifting as far as the others.

$1000 is very conservative lol, I agree with milekyle, move on to something else.

Flat cam would contaminate the entire oiling system, no matter the capacity.
