Negative cable at battery got to hot.
« on: September 25, 2016, 12:15:02 PM »
84 Sleekcraft BBC dual tanks manual switch. In middle of lake yesterday and ran out of gas on first tank. Switched to other tank and the time it took to draw up the fuel while turning over it fried the negative post on battery and the cable. Is this normal for it to get that hot ? Negative cable goes from battery to block. Manual fuel pump of course. Don't really want it to happen again.
Thoughts ?
Thanks for your time.

1. Loose connection at the post (corrosion)
2. May need a larger gauge cable.
3. Carry some carb cleaner, to prime the engine next time, or go electric fuel pump.

I would definitely NOT use carb cleaner or any other solvent to prime the engine.  If you must, use starting fluid.

The windows in this block are the result of carb cleaner detonating while cranking, kicking back, breaking the piston, and sending the rod through the cylinder wall.

That sounds like starting fluid (ether), not carb cleaner.

We used carb cleaner on the alcohol cars for years to cold start them. Never had a problem.

I have seen ether go wrong though. Ether is very violent.

Yes I agree" I have seen it used in both gas and Diesel engines " if  the shot is too big and the motor isn't tight enough to hold it you'll blow the fu$&@k out of the accessory drive. just my 0.02 😎👍🍺

Thanks for the info fellas. That's amazing what the solvents can do. I'm going to larger cable and possibly electronic fuel pump this winter. Are there any options on removing the manual fuel selector and drawing from both tanks at same time or is it better to keep them separate ?

I would much rather see you use a full port ball valve on each tank.
