No, restrictors must be installed while the engine is being rebuilt...  Did you ask the previous owner if restrictors were installed during the rebuild?

I have an Olds, and I do not run them,  nor am I going to put them in.  Traditionally, restrictors are for engines that are running roller or mechanical flat lifters that do not need oil to maintain valve lash.  The story says that during extended periods of high RPM, all of the oil will be pumped up into the heads, thus starving the bottom end.

Alot of different opinions here, most people do not like Olds anyway...Do your homework and make your own decision.

Just watch your oil pressure, it will take a fair amount of wide open running before it starts to drop.   BUT IT WILL DROP !
These motors will run as long as anything else, they just don't like to be Hot Rodded.

Go and pick up a Moroso accumulator tank   http://www.summitracing.com/search/brand/Moroso/Product-Line/Moroso-Engine-Oil-Accumulators/?autoview=SKU   , works OK when you don't trust the oil pressure to be consistant, run it as hard as you want, just not for extended periods, the problen is the extreme volume of oil they move, it is slow getting back to the pan...

Get it wet, you will have plenty of opportunities to build it this winter.

I think you've got a good boat right there! The 455 is more than adequate for almost any application, including hot rodding, really, just has to be seriously prepped for it if that is your intention. (If that is your intention, easier and cheaper to go Chebbie or Ferd anyway)

Almost all BOP (Buick/Olds/Pontiac) "Big Block" engines suffered from the same malady. Oil flow and continuous high speed operation at or near the 5000 rpm mark. Kings of torque for their size/weight, just not sustained high RPM screamers, which is what we demand from hot rodded jet boats. Short bursts at those levels are fine.

The 455 has been used in boats almost since the engine was designed, so don't let this scare you. I would get an RPM limiting CDI box and have a blast! This is your first boat, so run the hell out of it!

Ray

Edit: I prolly should clarify the Oiling problems associated with these BOP engines. From back in my hot rodding days, the problems were, as already pointed out, loss of oil in the pan (Actually, somewhat that, but more the "frothing" of what oil was there, (Foaming), and it also loaded up elsewhere). restrictor kits, etc alleviate the problem somewhat, but at the risk of starving any hydraulic lifter cam. Roller or not. Potentially other parts of the engines as well.

Back in the day on Pontiacs, we seriously deburred and smoothed all internal surfaces (Particularly on top side of the heads and lifter valley). In some cases when done, you could see a clear reflection after painting the lifter valley! A windage tray and crank scraper were mandatory, I don't recall any serious issue and we never used any restrictor kits (Don't remember if they were even available then). Our solution was to aid drainback as much as possible, and it seemed to work. Though never did a jet boat engine, but seems relevant to the discussion in progress.

Both of my boats have olds engines with out restrictors, I run the hell out of them from time to time. The lake I go to realy isn't that big ( you can loop it in 20min at 35mph when its clear full. Wide open for 30-45 sec is all the rough ride any one needs, never drop any pressusre untill my boat got hot one time. I have a 12 quart pan with 2 hoses 3/4 " going to a daul remote filters that holds probaly 3 more quarts. IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX ITwhen you rebuild it there cheap why not put them in then

I did a resto on an Olds 442 a few years ago. The motor was built by Mondello, forgot his first name, out of Cali. This would be the Olds guy for info/work.

Talk to Tom @ JBP  or  Timminator.   Stay away from Mondello, especially don't have them do any work on anything.

Mondello used to be a name associated with the best on the early hemi engines? (331, 354 and 392? Plus the Dodge Red Rams, etc.) Different persons?

Really? Mondello is the Olds guru of Olds gurus, had them prep and assemble a tri power 394 for my 31 roadster a few years back, made just north of 500HP and never let me down, we talkin' about the same Mondello? Paso Robles CA?

The Mondello operation I know of is in Corona, CA (near Riverside in the I.E.)     He doesn't work on boat stuff any more and his reputation for motor assembly and even backing the parts they sell is terrible these days.   Ask around over at Real Olds Power.com
I think there was more than one brother, but the shop in Corona didn't even really want to talk to me about building a motor unless I wanted to spend north of $10K.    Since then I have found NO ONE that has been happy with their recent dealings with Mondello.
Most everyone does agree that back in the day these guys built some bad ass stuff.  Sadly things have changed.
