Does anyone have efi on there jet boat on this forum.
« on: June 09, 2009, 04:35:57 PM »
Im having alot of issues wiring this thing up. Rite no i have no spark. The ecu is wired completly separate from the new hardin marine harness and stereo, and power inverter. the ingnition is also separate, msd 7-al. all brand new. fast distributor and ecu. everything is wired to instruction. no spark. I think it might be the coil but its brand new? Any ideas. I hope its something simple. 468 bbc.

I am currently working on my BBC 8-71 EFI project with a bugcatcher, see my other posts. I am running accel thruster dfi. What you need to make sure is that the crank or cam signal from the distributor is wired correctly to the ECU. I do not know much about FAST system but there is a guru on PB. His user name is Unchained. He even helped me get a MAP (tune/program etc) to get my engine running on my engine stand.

Does your fuel pump come on when the engine cranks. I ask this becuase if the ecu sees an ignition pulse, the fuel pump will come back on during cranking. The ignition pulse output of the ecu (again I am relating this to my accel DFI) needs to be wired back to the MSD box labeled "points". Also the ecu should power up the MSD when you turn the key on and run position. Do not confuse the MSD 7-al main power and ground wires with this. Speaking of grounds, make sure all the grounds from the ecu are grounded to the battery and not the block. The input to the ecu needs to come from a crank or cam signal on your dist. I am running a crank trigger so my input to the ecu is just a crank signal as I do not a cam signal cause I am running batch fire and not sequential injection.
I re-wired my DFI harness from end to end to get it to fit on how I wanted it. The first thing I did when I took it out of the box was cut it up. Crazy, but it all fits like I want it to.

great stuff. Dont have the fuel pump wired to the the ecu but im going to. it worked on the dyno with out it. learnd that you def have to have the grounds to the bat and not the block. the box lights up and flashes like it supposed to, ecu same story. no fail codes yet but it not running either. its a dual sync dist, plugs into the ecu. points wire comes from ecu to point location on msd box. pulled # 1 plug and turned the motor over, grounded plug . no sparky. i think maybe 12 switch somewhere but there all connected to a fused 30 amp bus bar that runs to the key. it has 2 batts so thinkin maybe that has something to do with it. just a thought. when i run the motor i run both batts at the same time. the ecu is wired to 1 batt and the msd to the other. do you think that could be a issue?

So you are saying you dyno'ed the engine and used the dyno shop fuel pump that was not wired to the ecu at all ? So the dyno operator just turned their pump on and did not let the ecu turn it on ? Also did the dyno shop use it's own ignition box too (that had to be wired to the ecu though). I did not dyno my engine but I called a shop and he stated to bring my MSD box and my fuel pump I am going to use as if it is in the boat/vehicle. I am going to tune it in the boat with a wideband 02 (water off to the header of course)
Make sure the 12+ kicker wire to the msd 7AL box is coming from the ecu +12v ignition harness to "turn-on" the MSD box labeld "ignition(red)" on the MSD 7AL when the key is in the run/start position. I would also isolate your batteries with a battery isolator if you are going to run 2 of them.

the project is one of those 4 hour campfire nightmare storys. lol. the dyno guy aka Ricky used the dyno fuel pump and full ingnition set up. same ing i bought. when disconnecting from dyno i labeled each wire with tape and re-wire the same way. mine does have a wide band 02 and was also tuned with a etg in every cylinder. im running dry exhaust. all the 12 v switch wires are connected to a bus bar mounted to the back of the block then  ran 1 to the key switch up front. same with many of the grounds. dont worry not important ones. i dont have to hook up the fuel pump to the ecu but i will anyway. i did run a small switch under the steering wheel to turn on and off the fuel pump in case of emergency, aka break pedal. the are 2 12 v swith wires on for the ecu and one for the distributor. should i wire one or both the the msd box instead to the key switch?

the green light on the msd box flashes when i turn it over and it suppose 2. thats why I was thinking coil issue. you have to be retarded to wire that wrong tho

You have a FAST wiring diagram and instruction manual don't you. If not I think you can download it I think. You need to study and understand it in how the system inputs and outputs work otherwise you will get confused and possibly get into trouble with wiring.
They keyswitch should be wired to the ecu and then the ecu powers up the MSD kicker wire and also the fuel pump. If you want an emergency cut off, just splice inbetween the keyswitch feed wire to the ecu. That way when you hit the "emegency" switch the pump shuts down as well as the ignition. I am wiring mine this way except with a lanyard teathered to my life vest. I am not familiar that an MSD 7AL has lights on it. Mine does not, maybe the newer ones do.

have the 4 hour video for installing and diagram. thats why im here. im almost positive the box and ecu are correct. how to I check if the coil is good or bad? IS THERE A WAY. pretty sure that what it is but i dond want to just buy one with out knowing it 200$$. I  like you idea on the kill switch. im going to do it as well.

Tj, thank you for helping. I always watch your post's and am always impressed  with your versatility and style. I wont have time till this weekend but at least now i have a hand full ideas to try.. Ill keep you posted so you don't make a similar mistake, all though you seem to have much more wisdom than me. eventually want to build a twin turbo 540 with the big chief heads. one day. Jimmy.
