oil leak olds 455

ok this summer we started having an oil leak problem so we removed the motor and replace the pan gasket an the rear main seal and put an oil cooler and a dual remote fillter put the motor in and still had the problem im just wondering. can a distributor leak oil we are leaking about 2-3 quarts per trip this weekend we went though 5quarts of 10-40w

thats alot of oil!!! should not be that much from the distributor look at the intake at the back, good luck

THE BACK OF THE INTAKE IS DRY AND THE BLOCK WALL IS TOO AROUND THE DISTRIBUTOR IS SOAKED INCLUDING THE BOTTOM OF DISTRIBUTOR

Replace the gasket between the dizzy and block. Had this issue with my bb in my car. It will either run down along the heads an off the side or be burned off while it sits on the intake valley.

The distributor leak may only be a "minor" leak. 2 quarts is a lot!

Check the dipstick tube. I had a cracked dipstick tube on an Olds that would lose about 2 quarts in a 3 hour outing. Pulled the motor and replaced a perfectly good main seal before I discovered the cracked tube putting everything back together.

The oil wasn't squirting up and coating anything. It just "showed up" in the bilge. And it was impossible to see underneath the logs.

Check for properly sized breathers too...I agree that the distributor gasket needs replaced.

If you build up enough crankcase pressure the will leak everywhere.........

the motor is going to get rebuilt this winter so we'll replace all the gaskets and tubes and breathers thanks for the help everyone

Olds is kinda funny some places. You MUST have correct crankcase ventilation. IE: A PCV valve AND a breather on the opposite valve cover. If not It will puke everywhere. The easiest place is a gasket or seal. ie: dist gasket, etc. Check these.....still have the problem. check compression. You got it really hot & killed the rings?....that would cause lots of crankcase pressure (blowby ) Not likely....but possible. If leaking down the back of the block.....pull flywheel & check 3ea. freeze plugs @ cam boss. Sounds like PCV problem to me. Also....Olds pumps alot of oil thru the valve train. If you run it WOT alot, ( or even just realy higher RPM's ) lots of oil stays "upstairs" in the valley pan,etc. Combine that w/ poor vent.....yer leakin'. One trick is to put two 1" holes in the intake valley pan w/a holesaw, ( if that's what you're using w/stock manifold ). I assume (?) your dipstick / tube is correct. Old has mondo counterweight on the crank. Overfill aint good.

Put in a new distribuator if that were you see oil comeing out! how many pounds oil pressure you running?

Clean it up and use engine oil dye then black light it .
A leak will show up under a blk light good luck
