I have noticed that the last couple time I have taken the boat out that the transom has a good layer or oil on the transom at the end of the day. I am running 10w/30. how can I stop this?

Where is the oil coming from? Valve cover/breather? Notice more after hard runs?
How much oil in what pan? What is your oil pressure?
Probably a Chevy?
Talk to me Goose.

it has to be coming from the exhaust tips. I just notice it at the end of the day. 454 BBC. couldn't tell you the oil pressure as it was from a couple months ago. Someone told me that the breather on the valve cover should be in the front no the back and that might fix the issue.
it has a really strong exhaust smell when in the no wake zones and is a bitch to clean.
-
Is it on the outside of the transom

yes on the outside of the boat. seems really rich to put that think film of oil on the transom.
-
I think your right that your running very rich but I don't think it's oil it's unburned fuel your seeing a lot off guys on here are way smarter than I am but I think the fix is a carb adjustment

how and what do I need to adjust?

For sure way smarter dudes will chime in. But man I can't even picture that much fuel coming out. Pull some plugs and see what they look like.
So no oil around the breather on the valve cover?

Man I just don't know enough about doing it to give that advice but there are a lot off guys on here that do and are great at helping out

No oil around the breather at all. I am no expert but it just seems to be really rich :banghead:
-
But it runs fine? Or seems to run rich? If it was me I am pulling plugs and checking. Also with that much fuel you might have some in your oil pan. Happened to me before when my crab took a poop on me.

I just replaced the plugs mid season last year. Boat is running great I just noticed it when I went to clean it and there was a lot more than it usually has
-
Is what your seeing like a burnt on black film

black film I would say

Do you have a picture of what your talking about on the transom also has the boat always done this are is it a new problem also when the smart guys get here they are going to want to know what carb what fuel pump do you have a regulator and probably a few other things I haven't thought of

I think u guys are on the right track..!
Definitely sounds like motor running rich

There has always been a little after the day is over but seems to be a lot more now.
as for the card it is a Holley 9029, stock fuel pump (not sure of make and model).
in the pic look at left and right side of the transom and you can see it.

sorry pics didn't attach

Nice looking boat

Black crap on the transom is typically caused by two things.
First, a fat idle mixture, bad power valve or high float level causing the motor to load up at idle.
Second, retarded idle timing causing a late fire and causes the carburetor throttle played to be in transition from idle to partially open to get it to idle fast enough, this make a hot exhaust that's a little fat, it cooks the carbon right to the boat.
Find out where the timing is at idle and pick up a carburetor kit and a few power valves (like a 4.5, 5.0 and a 5.5") and go through the carburetor, ensuring the float levels are set and the ports are all clear, it could have plugged up air bleeds.
Good luck.

So my opinion you probably need a carb rebuild the reason I think that is the problem got worse what's throwing me off is your not having some more symptoms i.e. Rough idle are fouled spark plugs these are very common with a rich condition. Again just my opinion take it with a grain of salt definitely guys on here that know a lot more than I do

thanks for the info. I have never worked on the carb before is it pretty easy to do or should I take it into someone?
-
I've never done it I'm lucky enough to have an older friend I have been boating with for years that takes care of it for me seen him do it he makes it look easy but I know it's not hell I even had something get stuck in mine once he took it apart in a cove and fixed it so he didn't have to tow me back

Is that an electric choke? It could've vibrated out of adjustment if it is.
Pretty sure that you can adjust that style by moving the plastic body of it left and right. Check to make sure it's not loose first. It may be out of adjustment at idle.
With boats and a rich condition use the KISS method first before you start tearing stuff apart. Process of elimination.
-
this is a dumb question but i am pretty lost when it comes to carbs. how and what needs to be adjusted?
-
This little thing i circled with the wires going to it.

I can't see anything to adjust. One of the wire sits a little loose.

The black plastic piece stamped with "Holley" can turn clockwise or counterclockwise if you loosen the three screws on the housing.
See the hash marks just behind the black plastic? There should be an index mark on the top of that choke housing to line it up with those hash marks.
Make sure it's not too far out of adjustment. It's not likely to be your issue but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Just something to check.
-
Is that a flame arrestor or filter? I'd assume it's an arrestor since it's an enclosed motor.
Maybe it's just the camera but that thing looks caked with junk. Pull it off and clean it.

Ok cool I will start with that and switch the valve covers. Thanks

Arrestor. It's just the camera

For choke adjustment. Engine cold, ignition off, pull the flame arrestor (air cleaner looking dealio) and grab a 3/16" drill bit. Adjust the choke to where the butterfly just touches the bit at the air horn..
Once done, turn the key on and make sure that black cap starts to warm up and the butterfly begins to open. Should take about 30 seconds to start to move.
I doubt seriously the choke is out.

I agree, GT. Just getting him to understand some basics he can familiarize himself with.
Carbs are fairly basic but you have to know what the parts of them are and how they work in relation to each other to find a solution.

Thanks again guys for the info. Another question by flipping the valve covers to get the breather in the front, I would need to get a longer hose for the other side to connect to the carb I would assume?

No need unless it launches like a booger from a rubber band.
If it don't go zero to sixty in under 4 seconds. It's fine.
You normally will have problems associated with breather positioning if the hull stands up on launch or accelerates like a scared rabbit.
