I have noticed that the last couple time I have taken the boat out that the transom has a good layer or oil on the transom at the end of the day. I am running 10w/30. how can I stop this?

Where is the oil coming from? Valve cover/breather? Notice more after hard runs?

How much oil in what pan? What is your oil pressure?

Probably a Chevy?

I think your right that your running very rich but I don't think it's oil it's unburned fuel your seeing a lot off guys on here are way smarter than I am but I think the fix is a carb adjustment

For sure way smarter dudes will chime in. But man I can't even picture that much fuel coming out. Pull some plugs and see what they look like.

No oil around the breather at all. I am no expert but it just seems to be really rich 

I just replaced the plugs mid season last year. Boat is running great I just noticed it when I went to clean it and there was a lot more than it usually has

Do you have a picture of what your talking about on the transom also has the boat always done this are is it a new problem also when the smart guys get here they are going to want to know what carb what fuel pump do you have a regulator and probably a few other things I haven't thought of

There has always been a little after the day is over but seems to be a lot more now.

as for the card it is a Holley 9029, stock fuel pump (not sure of make and model).

in the pic look at left and right side of the transom and you can see it.

Black crap on the transom is typically caused by two things.

First, a fat idle mixture, bad power valve or high float level causing the motor to load up at idle.

Second, retarded idle timing causing a late fire and causes the carburetor throttle played to be in transition from idle to partially open to get it to idle fast enough, this make a hot exhaust that's a little fat, it cooks the carbon right to the boat.


Find out where the timing is at idle and pick up a carburetor kit and a few power valves (like a 4.5, 5.0 and a 5.5") and go through the carburetor, ensuring the float levels are set and the ports are all clear, it could have plugged up air bleeds.
