Oil pan clearance

hey guys quick question,

When you use a dooley 10 gt marine pan you can use the stock pickup right, and still have proper clearance. I hope so, lol because when i stuck the pan on yesterday i had a weird feeling that there may not be the needed clearance between the pickup and the bottom of the pan.

well, it looked ok when i put the pan on, but Im just wondering if theres enough clearance between the bottom of the pickup and the pan for proper oil pickup

That's something that probably should have been checked before you bolted the pan on. I lay a straight edge across the pickup and measure from the pan rails of the block, deducting for the thickness of the pan gasket (or measure with the gasket in place), then do basically the same with the pan, measure the depth.

I like to have very close to 3/8" clearance.

I just purchased a new Stephs pan and they sent the wrong pick-up. I'll see if I can get it spaced this week-end to work. I put clay on the bottom of the pick-up and placed the pan on and then measured the thickness of the clay. You'll be good from 3/8-1/2" from the floor. A little over 1/2 shouldn't hurt anything, but don't go under 3/8".

I vote for 1/4 to 3/8 allowing for the gasket. Per the instruction sheet....

After talking with maddog in person, he decided that it's worth the extra effort to pull the pan back off and check. He described his pickup to me as a Melling part number, and said it was definately longer than the stock one I showed him, so I suggested it may be the pickup for the deeper "truck" type pan.

My Dooley uses a passenger car pick up (and it is a Mellings), pulling the pan is worth the effort IMO, It was always my understanding that the Dooley pans use an OEM blank, but could very well be bad info, The 10 quart Mercruiser pan I have is over an inch deeper and no way it will fit in a jet boat...

More than 3/8" of clearance and there is the possibility of sucking air under a hard run, always between 1/4"-3/8" clearance.

I welded the pickup to the pump and welded two tabs on the bottom of the pick up at 1/4" from the surface of the screen (that way I can check for contact with the pan during a teardown

)

It's almost a life death situation for the engine if this does not get done right...IMO..

Mellings makes a variety of different pickups. The description he gave me indicated it was the longer pickup, and is likely to be too close to the bottom of the pan.

thats one thing i never checked when i put the new oil pump/pick up and pan on.... Is clearance

I've seen more than one running around w/ no pickup, right omar? Baught a Blazer w/ a 327, drove it till i got the 385 built, pulled it apart, pickup laying in the pan. I think it's moroso that makes the pump bottom that IS the pickup, nice.

yea I am gonna drop the pan, but when I installed the pickup I was a good little boy and JB welded the pickup to the pump so I have to get a new pump and pickup lol.

I've done this before & it seems to be a pretty solid way to set up your pan,I know it works on a Ford.Use a peice of clay,not too hard to find.with the pickup loose,"not welded" without the gasket.Put the clay ball on the bottom of the pickup & adjust the pickup & fit the pan in place until you have a 1/4 in slab of clay"like Gumby".At that point tack weld the pickup.With the gasket you should have approx 3/8 to 1/2 in clearance.Pretty good clearance
