Oil pressure problem.

OK here it goes, I have a newer motor. I pulled the motor out plastic gauge main and rod bearings for clearance all checked out good. I put a new gauge, sender and even a mechanical gauge on the motor they both read the same oil pressure. So I do believe it's not a gauge issue. U fire the motor up 80 psi. Start to go up river get s little heat in it 40 psi at idle, you nail it it goes to 70 psi for s second then shoots down to 20 psi. I'm just blown away. Has any one else ever had this problem?

It does have a 10 Quart pan with trap door if this helps

How can u tell if you have the correct dip stick? For the pan. Could the person I bought it from have installed wrong dip stick

Am I reading correctly that you had the pan off, checking bearing clearance?

Last time this issue came up, the pickup fell out.

How much oil?

Does it have a tray?

What oil?

Any idea on oil temp?

Sounds too full of oil to me.

Pan to pick up should be about 5/16". No less than 1/4", no more than 1/2". Was that checked?
Pick up welded on?

Pick up was welded on. Yes I did check oil pick up to pan clearance, was good. No windage tray. I put 20-50 VR1 oil in it on test stand it had like 95psi of oil pressure on test stand. Drained all the oil out and put 10 quarts of 10-30 Valvoline. I'm wondering if the Dooley oil pan takes a different oil dip stick. Because it had a stock like chrome dip stick that I cut to mark and make work. I removed it and it was brittle and broke. So I'm wondering if when I grinded the notches in the side of I weakened it.

Flusher. I pulled the motor the first time because oil pressure was low. And go check the motor out. Not because the pick up fell off.

Could it have not enough oil and pumping it out to quick? High volume pump. With not enough oil. That's why it goes from 40 to 70 it runs out of oil then drops to 20 psi.

Use the factory stick and drop the oil level to the very bottom of it, like one to two quarts low, run it again. Grab a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer if that cures the issue. Keep it less than 9 quarts in the pan.

Without knowing a lot about your set up, I would stick near 40wt.

They welded part of a windage tray to the top of the pan, I cut it out. I don't know how someone could do that to a expensive pan that was new. It's a eagle rotating assembly it's a 496. It's the nicest motor I've ever had I just don't want to mess it up. The pan has a trap door in it so I tho it was starving it. With the windage tray on top

I run a ten quart Dooley and a MOROSO windage tray, trap doors, works great, but with ten quarts, the oil temp goes to the moon. Basically aerated oil. Pulled out a quart, runs awesome. Trap doors are virtually unaffected by a tray.

Actually it's a milodon pick up if I remember correctly and they bolt on. Don't most BBC oil pick ups bolt on? I. Not to familiar with BBC and I might be confused with the one in my 67 Nova. Sometimes life is a blur.

They technically press into the pump, it should be TIG welded to the pump itself.

Since I'm a cheap ass, I tack weld it with a MIG and braze it all the way around.

Ain't the press in one's stock? If I recall mine is a milodon that bolts to one of the bolts on the oil pump. Maybe I'm wrong

There is a bolt, but still presses in.
