Oil spraying from dipstick

Last summer I took my boat out for 4 days and the final day oil began spraying from the dipstick. Any ideas as to possible causes? Oil pressure remained good the whole time.

That would be from excessive blow by from bad rings. Do a compression test.

What engine?

Oil blowing from the dipstick can be caused by virtually anything. Typically either a serious oil foaming problem, poor crankcase ventilation, too high of oil level (going back to windage foaming), oil overheating and has broken down the viscosity, poor pan design, cracked piston or ring problem...

Without more information it's all a W.A.G.

454. I have a 10 qt pan (B&B Stepps). Oil wasn't leaking from anywhere else, just spraying out the dipstick. Like I said too, oil pressure remained good and boat ran fine. I'm just hoping its nothing serious.

How much oil are you running?

Do you mean a Stef's pan? Mine only held 7 quarts.....

Also what oil are you running? Any clue what your oil temps were?

Sorry for the twenty questions, but without a leak down test, it's all just speculation. ;) Probably something silly. :thumbup:

Yeah. I run about 5qts of 50 weight. No idea on the oil temps tho. That was my 2nd trip out since a complete rebuild. Ran great other than that. I know it's hard to diagnose without looking at it. I was just curious if anyone had this happen or knew someone who had this happen to them.

I had this issue as well. Found out I only have a 6qt. Pan, not an 8qt.

My instinct tells me that running a leak down might be one of your first steps, since the engine was just rebuilt.  It's possible there is a ring sealing problem.  What kind of breathers do you have?  Who assembled the engine, have you talked to them, or did it yourself?  PM for my number if you want.

If the engine is turned around and has a front sump the oil will run up the dipstick tube. I put a piece of hose on the tube and push the stick down, helps to seal if it still does put a clamp around the hose to keep the stick down

I had same problem on 460 bbf mine was do to having a double roller time chain which kicks up oil. No big deal

First day on the water got past the no wake zone and got it planed and started cruising and I look Back and oil is gushing out. Blew the dipstick completely out into the lake somewhere.

I have a 10qt pan & had the same problem. Attached a spring from the dip stick receiver arm to the dip stick & problem solved. No more oil spewing from the dip stick.
