Title: oil
Post by: challenger on September 21, 2009, 04:48:25 PM
is 40 psi   normal
80 psi at start up  then drops drown to 40 psi at warm up if you bring the rpm's up    its 80 is this with in the normal range

I'd run it  ;D

General rule of thumb is minimum 10psi per 1000 rpm.

I have been running the same oil and get almost identical numbers.  After it gets real warmed up mine will drop to 40 at idle.  No problems like this for 2 seasons.  Engine is coming out tomorrow for a new oil pan gasket though so I will peek at the bearings to see how they like the pressure. >:D

i would change over to 20-50 it will be a little easier on the motor or just make sure your oil temp is up before you start hammering on it.

I'm starting to here not very good things about Synthetic , Ralph what u think.?

Oil leaks, valve train failure etc.....plus gasket failure.
What is your input ???

I've always used  20/50 wt  Valvoline Racing oil...never had a prob.

kinda reminds me of a story dave

my last motorcycle race back in 07 i went to pick up my usual oil for my dirtbike which was yamalube 4r...it was what was always ran in my bike and so i didnt want to change anything...it is a synthetic mix i guess you would call it...and the cycle shop was out of it...well i wasnt going to race on old oil...old oil for my motorcylce is 3 solid long rides....so i was like alright i need oil give me some lucas...which was a full synthetic oil...well anyway about 20 miles into a 106 mile race i got into a course collision and went down...when i picked my bike up i realized it was leaking oil and my boots were covered...i was like oh shit! anyway i kept going...pulled into a pit and we checked the oil it still read good and did so the whole race, but come to find out it was the different type oil that found all the leaks...after and extensive wash i found what gasket was leaking and replaced it and has never leaked since...however...when i did the oil change my bike before hand had a little bit of smoke coming from the tail pipe and after the synthetic change it actually went away! my conclusion is the synthetic worked great for lubricating parts of the motor, but being how slick synthetic is it found a weak link and did leak! but i still run the lucas product in my bike now, and the bike has so many hours on it that it is unreal, and no rings no piston no nothing...it starts and goes and does what i need...i think 80 on gps is fast enough in the dessert

Thank's 4 your input:

I here alot of pros/cons...I guess leaks r better than engine failure,so long as u check the oil level  ;D

Dont know sh t, so consider the source.
Ran our first race at Puddingstone on Kendall 40wt. After seeing the oil temp running 250* switched to Lucas 20/50 syn. We ran that oil for 2 races (8 heats) without changing it. When you pull the dip stick, the oil is crystal clear. Thats after close to 60 hard miles. We'll pull the motor down this weekend and check the bearings.

Did you notice any difference in oil temp with the synthetic?

I thought it would drop, but it still ran between 250 and 260. I still felt better with the syn. over the dino oil at those temps. Need the oil cooler next season.

Forgot that Harold cut the impeller from an A to a C. So our rpm's went from 4900 to 5800 without a change in temp. All things being the same I would have to guess that the oil temp would have come down.
