Olds rear main seal

OK. My engine is out for external drain back mods and I want to fix the rear main seal leak that's been messing up ma bilge all last year. I've never done one. Can anyone give me some tips? I've heard to use a Ford 460 seal. Can I just pick one of those up at the parts store? Will I have to lift the crank to get the old seal out? What works the best?

Don't know off hand. It's in a 76 boat but I have no idea if it's even original. What markings can I look for to find out? Do different years use different seals?

Early ones used a rope seal.

Pick up a Lysle tool "Sneaky Pete".

When I get a minute I'll try to find a write up on replacing a rear seal.  You should not need to lift the crank unless someone used RTV on the seal.  (Don't do that).

The 460 rear main will work in your block make sure u stagger the two pieces so they don't line up with main caps .. Or u will get a leak ..

That's to everyone who replied. I'll have to find the part number and get it here. Meanwhile I'll see if I can extract the old seal. I'll probably be back here asking more questions before I'm done.

Also, what are those little pieces that are shown along with the ropes in the rope seal kit?
