Paging Crewcheif!
« on: March 15, 2010, 04:04:41 PM »
Hey, you're the only guy I know also running O/T pipes identical to mine.

On the trip home today, as I watched the boat in the mirror, one, or the other, seemed to not be the same one at any given time, was shakin around like it was loose or the weld cracked. Was never both, kept switching between which one was doing it, depending on when I looked back. Everytime I stopped I wiggled them and they were tight, but they do still seem to flex alot at the first bend "up"...not a visible crack anywhere, no wiggeling at the welds, no peeling chrome is this normal for those things? or is there a crack under the chrome possibly?

Sorry if this is retarded, just never seen it before......Or trailered it that far or that fast!

Good question. That's kind of scary knowing how much they cost. Ive seen supports on some so its possible some may have a weak spot but I'm not sure. Let some air out of your trailer tires for a softer ride and keep it under 90 mph when towing. That's all I got with out seeing them. Is your hull strapped down to the trailer at the rear?

Yeah, it's strapped down. Just struck me as odd, I leaned on 'em pretty hard and expected to snap one off, but no go. In the mirror they looked like I'd be dragging one down the street by its AN fitting tho. Roads were not rough at all, really, and only at 80mph max did I see it, but did see it at 65 as well.

Weird fo sho! to my eyes!

Mighta solved it on my own. Kinda hard to see in these pics, but they are definately cracked at the welds where the flanges meet the pipes.........Appear to have been welded beforre kinda huh?

Now on braces after I get these puppies welded......design my own I suppose?

Ray

Edit, pulled them off, they're pretty bad! Called in a favour to have these welded for the time being, hopefully that works for awhile. Anyone got any REALLY good ones laying around? Otherwise, a couple more O/B dumps and zoomies are goin on the focker!

RAy Ray Ray  .  .  .  please stop towing at 80 mph.    No trailer tires are made to run that kind of speed.   Remember the insurance thread.   They won't pay off for that and things happen really quick at that speed.   Don't wanna see you upside down when I leave Blythe doing 60.   Ain't worth it.

looks like those have been re welded before. make sure you have your welder grind off the old welds and tig weld it. have him do a double bead and you should be good for a while. it looks pretty nasty.

Sorry, John, yeah I do tow fast, but here in AZ, we can tow 75 MPH legally if that's the speed limit! I find it hard to beleive the tires won't take that and  lil more or less? I guess I'm lucky all my boats have newer tires on their trailers, but they should all be C rated or better no?

I agree, romper stomper, they look BAD!! They look so pretty otherwise, (Since Nordie and RJ polished them) so I'm really hoping my bud can get them done right! I guess we'll see! Whomever welded them before, I don't beleive they took them off the boat to do it. Either way, I think I'm lookin at some real ugly supports for them to make it last. Last thing this boat needs.

Got the dry zoomies here JIC.........

Legal and safe are not the same thing.   Ask your tire store (if they really know what they are selling).

Because I love ya Ray, I sharpened up my pencil and in rough numbers your tires turn 60,500 revolutions an hour at 60mph versus  75,700 revs at 75mph.   Dunno if that means much but it did make me remember why I ditched Math class a lot.   >:D

Forgot to post the fixin part on these.  ::)

I thought they were chrome, nope! S/S, Gil  stamped on the flanges. They hadda weld a patch on one from the previous weld job. Not quite Valore caliber work, but it'll do since it's on the bottoms and won't be seen! They're back on and werkin good!

hey ray, if they are in fact stainless. thats probably what cause the problem to begin with. the original reapair looks to be rusted. that leads me to believe they used a carbon steel filler on the old weld. when carbon is joined to stainless, it is very prone to cracking. the new repair looks good, but im just a welding instructor.

Yeah, that's Pickle! Gotta finish up the gel restore and wax on that and post pics! Nordie got me turned on to how to polish the thing out! New boat has me pre-occupied, lol.

Boat MAY be for sale soon, we'll see. Hate to do it, it is VERY unique and original.
