Prep for storage?
« on: September 22, 2007, 12:45:34 AM »
What do you do to prep your boat for storage during the off season?

Being lucky enough to be in SoCal we could probably use it year round but mine will be down for a few months and was trying to decide if I should do some extra prep before I park it.

Thanks

:D :D :D  lmao

Drain all the water ,pull the coil wire and spark plugs crank the motor while 'fogging" with WD down the open butterflys, mist WD on the headers and wipe down .Put a couple of old socks full of desicant (water absorber crystals) in the bilge BE SURE to pull the plug if left out side, We say fill your tanks up and put Stabil in (low tanks sweat inside ) Don't cover with plastic nonbreathable tarp, tent your boat cover and go in to watch football .... just random thoughts   Tom

You may want to run your motor out of gas. Disconect the gas line and let her run till she stops.
Less chance of varnish building up in carb. I like to fog the carb when she starts to run out of gas.
I do the same to the cylinders, coat them with oil and bump starter to coat the walls.
Now is also a good time to check spark plugs, see if they need to be gapped of replaced for next year and reinstall.
At this time since motor still warm from running her out of gas, change the oil, get rid of all the nasty chemicals that build up from running, store in fresh oil!

Like Tom said, coat every metal part with a barrier oil, protect it all from RUST. You'll be much happier when your baby still looks new next year !  ;D

one last thing...  put a battery tender on your battery. a small unit running auto (say 1 amp) will keep her as new as possable for next year, good cheap investment!

I picked up one of the soft wall garages at Pepgirls to help give some additional protection.

Thanks for the input, there was a couple things I had not thought about  :D
