Problems with Milodon oil pan & dipstick

I have a Milodon 10qt plus filter oil pan 31577. I blew out my oil pan gaskets because (problem 1) the dipstick didn't read full until there were 13qts in the pan (problem 2) I dropped the pan today change the gasket and I filled the oil pan with 10qts while the pan was off and it doesn't even show on the stick but what's troubling is with 10 qts the oil is about and inch and a half above the windage tray. WTF!!!! I checked all the part #s and there correct. Is Milodon just shit products or is the oil suppose to be above the windage tray (I wouldn't think so)?

Is your dip stick clearing the windage tray when the oil pan is bolted up?

The dipstick tube is below the windage tray and the dipstick stays inside the tube

Because I put 10 qts in the pan while it was of the motor to check it.

In my 12qt Dooley pan I only run 9qts. I fill it so it barely shows on the stick. It took me a little trial and error and advise from the guys here on the site to get it dialed in. I also run a 3qt accusump accumulator.

is your dip stick installed all the way into the pan? on mine (just a regular pan...) i had to pound it in pretty hard to get it to fully seat.

The angularity of the engine mounted in the boat will influence how the oil sits in the pan (at rest). If the engine has a steep angle, the oil will level itself higher on one side and possibly be over the tray. With that being said, the angle of the boat on the trailer or in the water (at rest) may compound that problem.

Once you get it worked out, run the engine to bleed the system and trim the dipstick tube to indicate where you want it.

I have mentioned this numerous times in here over the years.... a ten quart pan does NOT hold ten quarts of oil.......

Just like a thirteen quart pan does NOT hold thirteen quarts.

It would be normal for the static oil fill to be slightly above the tray, basically because you have not taken into account that the tray does NOTHING when the engine is not running.

Once the engine starts and runs, there are about two to three quarts of oil out in the system doing there job.

In a bot you should run about 8% less oil in the pan than the advertized size of said pan.

basically you should be running a tad over 9 quarts. Make new marks on the stick if necessary, the biggest idea behind a larger than stock oil pan is added oil capacity for controlling temperature and foaming but also to get the oil level farther away from the crankshaft.

I ended up putting 8 qts in the pan and I have a remote dual oil filter set up so I filled the filters and that took 1 qt so the whole system now has 9 qts it barley touches the dip stick but I'm not putting and ounce more in it. Hopefully I won't have anymore problems she's all back together again and this time I painted back to Chevy orange which is the color it was painted when my dad ran that motor in his flatbed tow truck for the last 20 years problem free so I think the motor is happy again. If I do have any more problems that focking pan will go in the nearest dumpster and I will put the stock pan back on with the stock ls6 windage tray. I will take back out to the river next weekend and update.

look if your gonna toss the pan send it to me. it sounds like you might have the wrong dip stick and GT said it just over 9qts so fill right get a new dipstick and run it

Milodon advises the following the their oil pans:

With a bone-dry engine (no oil in it) place the vehicle/vessel in it's free-standing attitude (in other words, put your boat in the water).
Add the amount of oil as recommended for the oil pan (in this case, add your 10 quarts of oil).
Install your dipstick and note the oil level--scribe this level on your dipstick as it is the new "Full" level for your engine. (You may or may not need a different dipstick to get a good reading with the new pan.)
Start the engine and allow the oil to circulate. Shut off engine and allow your oil to settle.
Measure oil level with your newly-scribed dipstick. Top off to the new "Full" mark as necessary.

After that you may play with oil level if you feel it's necessary to do so. .
