well today after 15 years of abuse and going from hell and back multiple times and just tune the new 600's to run right the boat ran the best it ever has. On the last run around Elsinore, the olds finally decided to call it quits :banghead:. Well you know what that means upgrade and rebuild time (p.s. it really embarrassing to get pulled back to shore by a jet ski)
-
15 years is pretty dam good!
-
hell it could be longer when we got the boat it had a new hour meter and when my dad took it apart all he did was change all gaskets 15 years ago. he said then it it looked like someone used the hell out of it.
-
did someone order a milkshake cause i know i didnt :banghead:
-
ready to pull
-
If you want to save some money on some internals for that, I have some pistons, a crank, and a windage tray that I would love to get of my shelf. Cheeeep! John 951.454.1934
-
thanks but we are going to get an eagle rotating assembly, and a mondello 10qt oil pan, windage tray, pump, and pickup setup for it
-
For an Olds? :screwy: Man you got it bad don't you? :banghead:
Sorry dude, I just had to. From one Olds owner to another, I hope it works out for you. The pistons are the L2323 .060 over. These are very popular with the drag racers I know. If they will work with your package I'll make you a great deal. Either way I hope to see you back on the water sometime this year breaking off a Bowtie or two.
-
Only a bowtie lol
-
thats all shavings on my finger :banghead:
-
Sorry to see that bad time to happen with summer around the corner. What happend she let go at high rpm? :(
-
i seen 3k when she started ticking and turn it off
-
just throwing this out there how hard would it be to convert from olds to bbc? i think we have enough spare parts laying around to do it.
-
I have some 4 point mounts, I'd be willing to do some tradeing
-
thanks but i actually have a rail system in storage for this motor. i guess i should have said that earlier
-
Of you have a rail kit then it doesn't get much easier
-
well she finally out of her oily mess called a home
-
well found more stuff inside the pan. on the plate half is bearing the other half is pistons. so while i was taking off the broken fiber glass on the tanks the battery box felt little squishy so i broke that out and it was dumping water out it had about a half gallon inside of it. how should the pump fell when turning it? rightnow its easy to turn but sounds a little rough.
-
Use your hose and squirt it in the pump really good then spin it again, the rough sound should go away, if not rebuild would be in ur future is my guess. when you tow ur boat road grime and what not get into the jet. after a long tow I always rinse mine
-
ok i will do that tomorrow. decide will it is apart to move a few things for easier access just moved the oil cooler and filters to transom then battery to the inside my plan for here is to paint the transom, bilige and stringers to the blue masking tape with dupli color bed armor. i'm tired of always having to check if my loader grate is still there :banghead: so i'm going to through bolt it
-
found a shiny alternator in the garage the other night so thats going to replace the ugly one. then i was able to flip the wire looms to the non faded side these originally were for a sbc. found more gunk and i think we need one more tunnel ram
-
can you say 495 oldsmobile >:D
-
well here's how the motor went it spun two bearings, welded one together, broke the number number 4 piston wrist pin area in half, bent the intake valve of that cylinder, the crank and the two rods were trashed
as of now all the oil mods are done, all the machine work is done, cam bearings are in, most of the head work is done, the rotating assembly is supposed to be here next week.
then we can order the mondello 10 quart pan pump and pickup and the valve train.
while ive been waiting i've been doing a few little things here and their like to make things look nicer i got rid of the spectre fuel line and changed it to a earls. ive just been polishing

Looks like a stock crank, what's the bore? How did you get 496ci?
I see #5 main cap doesn't have the most important oiling mod...oil drain back holes aren't enlarged
What do you have done to the heads? Other than roller tip rocker arms?

What's the compression height of those pistons?
What's the difference between main and lifter restrictors?
Are you going to be running headers on that engine?

I don't know the comp height or the difference other than where they go.
Yup running twisties. They didn't braise the two inner exhaust port dividers.
The cam that was in it was in such good shape still we had it reground and reused it. It's an engle 2725h hydraulic cam. they changed the lobe center to 110* from 108*

Where do the lifter restrictors go? What else do you have for oil mods?
No point in braising the Siamese port wall if the cross overs weren't filled...
Why change the lobe center?
Are your headers water injected?

They go inside the lifter bores.
It had a reversion problem. Which is the main reason why they did the port work cause it had so much rust in them

Dual filter for more cooling? I didnt know oil getting hot was a problem on a oil restricted olds with a big pan. Maybe thats why im getting a little pressure drop on long runs on my olds even with a 12qrt pan.

We had it setup this way with the old motor. Our engine builder said to just keep running it. I don't know if it helps for cooling the old motor didn't have restrictors and only had a 5 quart pan. With the cooler and filters I would come in to the no wake at Elsinore after a good run and it would have like 10 psi. Of course that's after a full throttle run across the whole lake.

The lowest ive ever seen mine drop is 20 and thats after 20 min at 4-4500 rpms. But it also idles at 500 rpms so if i goose the throttle a bit itll jump to 30-35

Ok so went back to havasu and the boat ran great till the last run back from steam boat cove. I got on it and looked back and noticed the milk coming from the pass valve cover and dipstick. When I stopped the weep holes were pouring. So the Bassett valve was stuck. We put it on the trailer an brought it home and drained like 18 quarts of oil and water ( holds 14 quarts of oil normally). I put air in the cooling system to see if I could hear any leaking I put 20 psi in and let it sit for 2 days checked it again still had 17 or so. Pulled apart the Bassett valve and there was a rock in it. Could the valve being stuck fill the bottom end?does anyone run a filter on the valve to keep this from happening? You might also notice in the first pic how it looks like it has no diverter or reverse bucket well we almost lost it we lost both set screws and on pin on the diverter knuckle. Only thing holding it were the cables

Damn dude. I went through this all last summer like 6 times. I doubt you were able tonsuck 4 qrts through the exhaust. There's gotta be a small gasket leak somewhere. What kinda shape is your timing cover in?

Heads didn't set correctly? That was my issue. When I rebuilt my olds. It would be fine at idle (no water in oil) but as soon as is give it some gas. The water would make it's way in. I also did a compression test (all checked out) as well as a leak down. Held 20lbs over night. Eventually pulled the heads off, had them re machined at clay smith ( previous machine shop was a joke) and currently have 5 trips with no milk. When you put the heads on, did you spray the head gasket with any copper spray? And made sure you did the toque sequence (3stage) correctly?

Ohh god what did I start haha.
This motor has always had a Fram on it since my dad bought it in 96 and even when he bought it, it had a Fram.
If you hate that filter so much then your definitely gonna hate the oil that I got for it today seemed like a better Idea to only 28 dollars on quakerstate instead of 95 dollars for vr1, if it was gonna milkshake again.

So did we. Well actually about 85 psi but we flogged a variety of B and RB Mopars mercilessly and used FRAM exclusivey with zero failures. But times change and the quality is no longer all that great. There are lots of better options available for the same money. And this is not something you want to cut corners on, motors are pricey to put back together when the $10 oil filter fails.
-
Well I think we figured out this oil and water issue over the winter I took the heads off and found the driver side head was warped and leaking water into the valley. I took them off an had them checked for cracks and machined. I put it back together mid march and haven't touched it since. So I figured tonight while I'm cleaning the garage I might give an update. Now to get it ready for the 4th in havasu
Also went and got a new temp gauge pressure relief valve and a ball valve for the headers to be safe
-
Well today after I removed the 4l60e from my truck and took it to get rebuilt. I decided while I wait for that I would put some focus into the boat. So I put new carpet on the floor and tanks, painted the engine bay, put the motor back in, removed the seats and cleaned them, and hooked up all the wiring. It was a Very productive day for me haha tomorrow or the next day I'm going to reglass the seat mounts and finish the carpet up front.

Took the boat to Elsinore today and ran it for a few hours. Besides for the battery being a little to weak this thing ran great. Temps were 150 in no wake and 120 or so at speed. Around 45 psi after three laps at 3k rpm. Oil level stayed the same which is really nice

Had my first full weekend without having to wrench on this boat 1 time it was really nice, didn't have 1 single problem all weekend. Don't Olds have an issue if there is too much cooling water pressure, it can push water into the oil?
Something about the water passage is too close to the edge where it can get into the oil.
When I had my engine rebuilt, I ended up with a milkshake. I closed the water intake valve a little and have not had a problem since.
I know this probably has GT shaking his head about reducing the inlet water. But that's for another thread. ;D
But my point is, can too much water pressure push past a gasket, in a certain area, that is specific to an Olds?
-
I'm almost positive its to much water cause of the fact that someone bumped my main inlet ball valve, wide open and I didn't catch it in till I notice I was making temp when it went in to the water on Saturday, I usually sit their and idle facing up river till it gets about 150-160 then I'll go and it'll drop to 120-130. It took about 10 mins to get anywhere on the gauge. Time to invest in a pressure relief valve😡.
-
Few quick questions.
1. I run straight 50w vr1 why on this fresher motor am I only seeing 40 psi cold?
2. From willow valley marina to the beach maybe .25 miles, why does my oil pressure drop to 10 psi?
( bearings gone )
3. When I take a Stoll to pirates cove I'm pushing oil out passed the breathers and out of the dipstick (excessive blow by, rings shot?)?
The block does have main and lifter bore restictors in it, and a high volume oil pump
When the motor was fresh I was seeing about 80 psi cold and 65 hot

Bearings going would be the most likely cause of the low oil psi.

The sound of a high volume pump in an Olds scares me.

Switch out the ball valve for a gate valve, finer adjustments than a ball valve, once its set, tighten the packing nut, and 'zip tie' it for security.
I had this problem on a BBC, water pushing out from intake water ports, installed gate valve 14 or 15 years ago, not a problem since.

I'm sure someone will chine in on this. I can't seem to find the article or pictures right now. There is a thread somewhere here in the board that shows pictures and dimensions.
What it boils down to is drilling and tapping the front and/or rear of the heads and oil pan to return excess oil into the pan.

V pump runs from 800 to 1500 for a complete kit. Just know what you are doing with the vacuum pump. To much all the time is bad news for bearings you will eliminate the oil mist. I would say no more the 6 inches for running around and if you would like to make a pass 12 inches would not hurt you.
-
I take it is adjustable? Can it be adjusted on the fly? Sorry for all the questions, just learning new stuff over here.

Depends on how you set it up. You do have to run a relief valve. But I have had great info from Bostick and set mine up with his help and can adjust on the fly.

Low tension rings and pistons with the appropriate ring grooves are also required for any performance gains to realized.
The above has performance gains in and of itself, but the effect is multiplied with a vacuum pump.
Keep in mind that pulling vacuum on the crank case requires energy. Just connecting a vacuum pump to a stock engine could net less horsepower. Jim's engine is built to take advantage of a vacuum system.

I was bringing it up for the simple idea of gaining oil return and crankcase pressure control.
The performance gains would be keeping oil on the pan. Lol

3. When I take a Stoll to pirates cove I'm pushing oil out passed the breathers and out of the dipstick (excessive blow by, rings shot?)?
Are you still running that pan evac system?
Wouldn't this act similar to a vacuum pump system?
Does it help seal the rings at all?
Or does it just help vent pressure from the crankcase?

. If you had a good sealed motor you could max out at 3 inches with a pan evac. But most or around 2" vac at best.

Yeah, but the breathers that came in the kit suck. Cause when I start doing passes they leak more oil then the valve cover does haha.
I want to weld an fittings to the covers to eliminate the breather but just haven't done it.

just throwing this out there how hard would it be to convert from olds to bbc? i think we have enough spare parts laying around to do it.
So are you regretting not taking this option? ;D

Honestly no lol I like being the odd ball boat out there kicking ass. This motor may be having its problems but not 100% its fault its me flat footing it every chance I get. I like it when people come up to me tell me this thing runs hard. Then they notice it has an Oldsmobile then they look at the pump and see it a jacuzzi and they get even more thrown off 😂

And I just realized I have a bad lifter 😬

It is cool to be different. But there is usually a reason it's different. ;D
You got to have a tender foot with an Olds. Give the oil time to get back to the pan.
I stayed on the throttle too long one time and had oil catch fire on the headers.
Have you done a leak-down test yet?
-
I almost had that happen 2 weeks ago 😅 I heard something go ding behind me it was the breather fell out of the valve cover at full throttle. That millisecond the header was covered in oil and bubbling. I shut it down, got a wet rag and started wiping down the headers.
I tried to I couldn't even build pressure cylinder 5 was pushing air out of the header so I rotated it 180° then it was pushing threw the intake

Needs to be at TDC between the compression and power strokes with the engine warm.

I don't think I perform the normal leak down test I block off every outlet and fill the block and heads with 15 psi. I've always done it this way, how I found out about the last head gasket. This time it didn't even build pressure and pushed air out #5
