Been running vr1 straight 50 since I bought the boat. 12qrts comes out to almost a100$ every time I change the oil. I heard rotella has a lot of zinc in it. I have a flat tappett cam so I need the high zinc content. Would I be alright running say 20w50 or somethin? Or is it worth the extra money for the vr1. Motor is a 455.

Are you looking to start a 300 post thread on oil?
If you want my answer, you will have to do the research to disqualify the information.
Rotella, Delo and all other DOT oils are and have been going through the same changes as regular passenger car motor oils. So what works now may not work later.
All that being said. I have run regular Kendall 20-50 with a little Camshield break in additive. Makes it a $35 oil change.
The one caution is, know what the heck you are shooting for as far as ZDDP content.
You have to research the ZDDP levels in the oils used and add just enough zinc to fortify what you have.
You really do not want to exceed 1,600 ppm (.16%) total.

What's your opinion on straight weight oil?

Well, honestly it puts you right back into a racing oil. I personally like straights in certain applications. The thought is, you aren't going to be running a jet boat in the snow.
Straight weights don't have the polymers that are found in a multi. Less crap better oil.
Imho.

How often do you change your oil ? I have read that the levels in Rotella has been reduced to meet requirements for smog equipment. I also use VR1 and for the 30 dollar difference I think I will stay with it. I change my oil between 4 and 5 times a season so it is around 150.00 that is 1 % of the cost to replace the motor. At the end of the day it is just habit I'm sure there is other oil just as good if not better. Two places I will not go cheap my oil and my beer!!!

When I was milking the oil about 8 times the first summer. Now about 2-3. All depends on how much I run it.

I use to do prep on a 700hp ls and ran vr1 only a 6 quart oil pan and would loose oil pressure after the engine would get hot. Then started 5 quarts of the vr1 and 1 quart of lucus and motor loved it.

I was looking at the Lucas the extreme duty marine...which the zinc % is .31...how much is too much? ha. Top fuel boat oil not 455 stocker oil?
too bad napa doesn't have bottle up racing oil :banghead: ...since they use Valvoline oil (Ashland owned).

That is a short term use oil, when I say short term, I mean one or two runs. ???
IMHO as long as the phosphorous levels are lower than the ZDDP levels I always give myself limits on zinc levels, my personal preference is approx. 1,600 PPM (.16%). Never higher (for me) than 2,000 PPM (.2%). I use a lower limit of 1,200 PPM (.12%) as a line I do not cross.
These are just my personal preferences based on recreational reading I have done. I use synthetics and regular oils, the theory is the same as far as I am concerned.

Check out these links. I personally run Rotella 15-40 in my 455 with no issues.

Went with the straight 50. So next question. I ran the boat the first time with the oil temp gauge. The highest I saw was 260-270 running pretty hard. Cruising it'd dropped to 230 ish and if I'd idle for 10 min or so it'd drop to below 200. But after running hard and dropping to a cruising speed it took alonggggg time for the needle to drop. Not sure if it's time for a cooler, or possibly my oils getting foamy? Right on the full line of her dip stick in a 12qrt pan.

I know I can find Rotella on sale everytime I go inside Napa Auto Parts. I stick with Delo for the Diesel.
The Vr1 is towards the top of the list of having the best wear protection period. And it has good amount of Zinc
Wear protection is key not just which has the most zinc.

So I've been watching this thread for a few days now just to see the different thoughts and opinions....then I started wondering if anyone is using aviation oil out there. Phillips 66 is only $5 and some change for a quart of 20/50. I'm trying to see if I can find anything on the zinc/phos content in those.
Sent from my iPhone using SoCal Jet Boats
-
Now that I think about it a bit more I do remember hearing a long time ago that most aviation oils don't have any zinc. I don't really remember though, that must have been a few years ago at least.

From what I remember, I think piston planes use a non detergent oil.
Not sure about the zinc.
Interesting question. I think it deserves a look-see.

Looked into this a little more in depth this morning and you're right GT, most of them are non detergent oil or ash-less dispersant oil. The Phillips 66 oil doesn't have any zinc in it, I'm not sure about the others but I assume they are the same.
After looking into aviation piston engines a bit more they are built to run on zinc-less oils. Now a lot of the newer light sport aircraft and home built stuff use subaru engines or rotex engine which are designed to be used with automotive motor oil. Shell makes an aviation grade oil designed for these engines but it's about 10 bucks a quart, might as well stay with vr1 or something similar.
I did find this page where someone tested a bunch of oils which is pretty interesting. http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35836

Just to let everyone know...napa has a month long sale on VR1 (non-syn) 1.90 off...not much but saves you about a 36 pack when you change a huge oil pan.

I've heard VR1 has zinc and phosphorus but lower levels then some others. My drag racing friends use it and love it but add more zinc with Lucas oil additive.. I use Brad Penn myself.. its great stuff !!!!
