BBF Dip Stick Issue?
« on: April 27, 2009, 03:20:37 PM »
anyway after my mead dealio on sunday with the group...hold on...when i was out on mead with everyone i checked my dipstick and had some water in the oil...so anyway when i got home i decided to recheck the oil...well i started to pull on the dipstick and it wouldnt budge...so i pulled a little harder and out it came! anyway when it came out it was bent into a U...my question is has anyone had this happen? if so what the hell caused it? could it be the timing chain? could it be the crank? should i be worried?

I have never heard of this happening.  Sounds to me like maybe the dipstick is too long to begin with.  Probably the crank rotating did it....i dunno.... :sly:

i havent taken the motor out yet to even find out anything in the rotating assembly...im sure skip would know...the pan is a dooley 10qt pan...i have had the boat out quite a bit and never had an issue...however my deal is i put it in one way and it reads low...put it in another way slides in easy both ways...and it reads high...my thoughs are maybe somehow it is going into the timing chain area? since it is a bbf and all that rotating mass is all right there...the bend that was in it appeared about the look of a crank counterweight, but maybe a timing chain idk...i dont think i am going to sweat it because there are no gouges in the dipstick...however i dont want it to happen again either

On a dooley pan, you prolly have a windage tray, (They come with them). the dipstick probably hit that and got turned sideways along the tray (Towards the aft end of the boat) a bit Josh. If that happened, a rod or counterweight probably bitch slapped it around a bit (#1 and #5). The fortunate thing is because the side the dipstick goes into, the dipstick woulda been bent down and away from the mains and rods and not sucked up into them. That mighta been disaster.

Both mine tend to hit the tray going in, kinda gotta tap them around a bit before they go in. The trick is to not just jam it in there, lol.

You're probably ok, doesn't sound major, but with that and the water, I'd change the oil and filter for sure.

the deal was it never had an issue going in i would never just jam the dipstick in there! the thing slid in like a hotdog thrown down a hallway! now seems to me with it a little bent it wants a certain way, but i find myself questioning which way is right? i have since fired the motor and no diptick issues...however it could be different bouncing around on the lake...idk! i wanna blow the motor up on my terms not the dipsticks...however yes oil change will happen tomorrow ray! even though seems like any indications on water in the oil are gone and the oil only has 2 trips on it i will not chance it!  im pretty sure some hose running was at fault for the water in the oil, but wtf do i know...
