What can I use to clean the rust mostly surface out of my oil pan?Don't really want to sand blast it.

I use a Roloc disc and a small air angle die grinder.

Coat the inside of the oilpan with primer and its less likely to happen again.

I would be hesitant to use abrasives as they tend to find their way into gaps between the stamped and fabricated parts of the pan.

I would consider a chemical approach.

I have always wanted to try an electrolysis process, Watch "MACHINE SHOP TIPS #133 Rust Removal by Electrolysis on the Logan Lathe tubalcain" on YouTube

Keeping in mind that I haven't tried this, so I really don't know first hand.  If you watch the video by shopdogsam,  "easy electrolysis,,,,  the clean way" on YouTube

that is recommended in the first video, he states that this process is "line-of-sight" and you might need to get creative with the anode(s).

Good luck,

Joe

Dry ice blasting.  The dude that does it not to far from here charged me $25. Took about 15 minutes.  Brought it home, sprayed it with Ospho and left it.

I think it's working. Hopefully I'll still have a pan in the morning

Better spray some Extend or Ospho or something in there. That fugger will rust right in front of your eyes.
