Title: Scat Crank: Fix or Junk?
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on May 30, 2015, 12:03:06 PM
This is the Scat stroker crank out of my 513ci BBF. It got knicked real good during the last catastrophe 2 years ago. Its a std (never been turned) cast crank and already pushing its limits as the motor was pushing 750hp @ 6k.

Its deeper than .030 so it can't be turned out, but can it be filled and turned? Is it worth fixing or should I junk it and get a forged crank?

I feel that deal might done. Normally when they weld them, they turn them down and spray the entire journal and re machine the whole ball of wax.

The only way I would even consider fixing that would be to have that ding milled down and smoothed out making a sort of golf ball dimple out of it.

I wouldn't do anything without having it magged.

With it smoothed out, I can't imagine it would cause any ill effects at all.

Jmho.

On second look. Turn the rods .020" (.010" if that line will clean) after smoothing that dent and let it fly.

Contact Castillo's Crankshaft, 14654 Firestone Blvd, La Mirada, CA 90638
(714) 523-0321.

You could have the journals cut down for BBC rods, but the expense of new rods (and machine work) compared to a new crankshaft May not be worth it.

Cutting the journals with large fillet radii won't weaken the crankshaft, in some cases it can actually reduce stress risers.  I believe there are some balancing benefits that can be had as well, should you try to take advantage.

. Not sure about the whole money ass deal. But I am sure what will work for 400 hp will not work for 800 hp

How many runs on a scat cast crank did Kasse say he has on their test motor. I think it's around 900hp if I remember right.

K ass e's tune is never off. Brads motor will be shock loading the pump in rough water..so my .02 says since you are at the max end if the hp for that cast scat crank so step up to the forged scat crank and be happy...When the cast crank comes apart and takes the rest of the 15k motor with it. Cheap ain't good and good ain't cheap..Welcome to racing

it seems that you may have missed the point :-\ should he try and save the cast crank or replace it...
the crank was fine in that motor until the rod failure or wheat ever it was..so could he get another cast crank? sure, but there are better options out there for a few dollars more. when the motor was built it was done on a tight budget and it kicked ass.

i didnt miss the point at all.. i posted earlier that i just had a wasted rod journal fixed for 75 bucks, i understand the budget stuff clearly, id fix it and run it..... jim replied to me "what works for 400hp dosnt work for 800hp" thats why i stated that even my turd 400hp  motor has a forged crank...thats all... carry on gentlemen..:)

I agree with gt have it turned and give the Jornal a polish and it will be fine, you have to turn it because that metal went somewhere (expanded )around the ding so the surface isn't straight anymore, once it's turned the ding will just hold a little oil but shouldn't cause a problem jmho

lol I've done some crazy stuff with cranks just to make a race, but to put lipstick on that pig and call it pretty is just crazy..

So I should apologize. Papa Ralph Brunt and I already had this convo while ago and we both agreed to switch to a forged crank. The amount of time/heart him and I have in this motor, I should have remembered the quote of "cheap ain't good, and good ain't cheap". This isn't a motor where it was said "good enough for the girls I go out with" (another favorite Brunt quote). I should just bite the bullet and get a forged crank.

Can't afford racing parts?
 Can't go racing....
Thats how it works with my wallet.
The fact that it's even in question should be your answer.

It was far too heart breaking for me to see bins full of parts so I've sold/selling everything off.
