Set screw stuck in foot peddle

I was trying to be very patient. Sprayed with wd 40, then used liquid wrench, taped on it, let it soak. Sprayed again waited. Decided to add heat with, twisted Allen then stripped it. Trying to drill it out with cordless not working very well. Don't have drill press. If and when I do get the set screw drilled out what size is the set screw? I think I'm screwed literally might need help. lol

Sometimes you need to cut your losses... Allen set screws are hardened. Pretty tough to drill. You may need a cobalt bit.

I have fought these before, they can be a real PITA. Once they are all broken up, it's drill time.

Can you get an easy out to bite into it? I normally heat the aluminum around the screw with a propane torch and then they come right out.

If not a reverse drill bit might be the way to go.

Heat. Then hammer a Torx bit into it if its rounded.

Thread size is 1/4-20, you can Helicoil it or just tap it out to 5/16-18. If you go with the 5/16 size, then put a small point on the tip of the screw so it will go into the slot. We use stainless steel fasteners and always put a little Anti Seize on the threads before tightening. That way you can remove it when required. TIMINATOR

Ok finally got the bitch out. It took hours. Drilling, heat, easy out, over and over.There is only 2 two tiny threads left. Should I put in a helli coil next size down so it will still fit in slot. It seams like the 1/4 set screw is big for the slot in the first place. First time changing throttle cable. Thank you for everyone's help.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I actually drilled all the way through the cable and the pedal on the other side oops. Good thing is I'll be doing what the threads above say. Tapping to the next size up. It took me about 30 seconds to drill it out and when my lazy ass puts this beer down I'm thinking 5 minutes to tap it out and put in the "double" set screw setup.

The slot is tiny. 1/8 in. 1/4 set screw already seams big. You would have to grind on the 5/16 quite about to make it fit the slot. Then again might be easier than going and buying helicoil kit?

I'm definitely not the expert but the next size up in the tap and die kit (9 bucks, harbor freight) I bought says 10-24. It seems like it would tap it out just slightly larger perfectly but I'm not sure if that's metric or...

10-24 is two sizes smaller. #10 screw with 24 threads per inch

Equivalent to a 3/16 coarse thread screw

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe my set screw is smaller. I can only get the 10-24 tap in to the first two threads so it seems like it would be a good fit. Regardless it's soft aluminum So im assuming tapping it the easier route. Then I'll have a tap and die set in the tool box.

The tap drill size for a 5/16-18UNC is a letter F drill which is .257"

I would shoot through it with a 1/4" drill bit and tap it 5/16-18.

Disregard that part, they are $4.52 each.

A standard stainless set screw with anti-seize would work best.

That would work perfect and go into the slot, but expensive. The stainless set screws are .98 cents at home depot. I don't like grinding on such a tiny piece. I guess that's what gloves and vice grips are for. Thanks Flusher.

28 years in a machine shop, I am proud to still have all my fingers and finger nails.

One friend of mine got his hair caught in the lead screw on a lathe and it ripped his scalp off.

Guy I worked with reached over a running horizontal boring mill. His jacket sleeve got caught and his right arm was ripped out of his body, from his neck to his ribs.

Guy in the shop behind mine got his shirt caught in a fly cutter on a vertical mill and it killed him.

Guy at my friends company was polishing a part on a lathe, using emery tape. Company had recently required to use of cut resistant Kevlar gloves. He couldn't let go fast enough when the emery tape wound up, grabbing the glove, pulling his hand in and pulverizing every bone before the hand came out of the glove. The company now has a new policy on wearing gloves around machinery.

X2 on the gloves. I work in the safety industry and I've seen my share of horror stories. You shouldn't be doing a heavy machining with higher speed spinning things so you should be good pretty safe gloveless. Remember eye protection though. I'm gonna tap mine tomorrow so I'll we watching this thread...

I have been really lucky, 10 years teaching machine shop and no serious injuries. In fact, I am the only instructor who doesn't have one.

My wife is beside herself about the wedding ring thing, but she deals with it.
