Starting from scratch what engine to use?
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:43:53 PM »
I like the idea of the lsx or the mod motor because of the weight savings, but i also am a ford man. But i want to keep things simple, and if i can save a few hundred pounds off the ass end of the boat i think it would be great! I already have a 460 ford, DOVE A heads, tunnel ram and carbs dist etc. just needs rebuilt. The boat is going to be down for quite a while so i can parts pick. Just noticed i said 3 engines, but i threw the bbc in there just for shits and now i cant edit the title, or i do not know how  O0

Picking the LSX purely because of the part interchangeability....GMPP is your friend.

Took a ride in a buds long travel buggy with an LS and twin turbos, lets just say 300' long wheelies in a hay field.  :screwy:

It took three days for the wet dreams to stop... :sly:

In my uneducated opinion, the mod motor would be way cool.  I know there making lots of power out of those things and big turbos.

If it was me though, I would start with the 460 you already have.  Get a new set of heads (bigger chambers), add a pair of turbos, and run the E85.  If you stick to that 800hp goal, and build it right, a pressurized 460 will last forever at that hp.

Hey!!!!! Money was never mentioned, weight was. :screwy:

If you want cheap, it has to be a BBC, hands down.

I was under the impression money was no object. ;)

I would not say that money is no object, as the more it costs the longer this whole build is going to take. But i think I really like the idea of the mod motor or the lsx for the cool factor. But all the of the engines are capable of the hp i want in a relatively mild mannered combo.

Also take into accout the torque numbers! The stroker is gonna be hands down the torque monster! Enough torque diffrence to make up for the weight diffrence.

Obviously I would vote for the Ford, but I would first like to know what you are shooting for: desired hp, intended peak operating rpm, impeller size, and max spending.

Aluminum heads will save you only about 35 pounds, or the equivalent of a typical car battery.

GT

Not necessarily. He already has the Ford.  Further, if you look at it in" hp versus dollars spent," it's possible for the BBF to give the BBC a run for it's money.

LO,

Disclaimer....For me.  ;) I have three BBC's sitting on the floor, I didn't take into account that he already had a hunk of FOMOCO.. ;D

I have been told by a pretty reliable source that every 100 pounds removed from the boat equates to approx. 30 HP..Just for general conversation.

If i was to run the bbf or bbc i would try to reach my numbers n/a. To my knowledge a complete ls1 is around 450lbs? and a bbf weighs how much?

Everything is up in the air as far as specs, i am just shooting for a 90-95mph boat on pump gas. The motor will be going in a 18ft southwind with a set back pump, ride plate etc.... blueprinted bottom.

With iron heads, figure close to 650#, same as a Chevy 454...You could save 60#'s or so with aluminum heads.  :sly:

If so, then the weight savings of the aluminum heads would be equal to about a 20 hp gain... The D0VE heads are about 70 pounds assembled, the similar aluminum about 35 pounds assembled. So it's actually about 35 pounds per head, or two car batteries.

My 18-ft S/W is has ported iron "smogger" D3VE's and it goes 85 mph gps, no set back pump, no shoe, no rideplate.

But it also porpoises at that speed.  Jack MClure once told me that he knew of a similar boat with the same setup that behaved the same as mine. He did a set back pump & rideplate and it did 92 mph but porpoised wildey.  Added trim tabs and it went 96 mph and rode smooth as glass.

If you want high 90's on pump gas then you should consider stroking it.  A 4.14" stroke 501 cubic inch engine with your D0VE heads and 32cc Diamond pistons would give you about 9.75:1 compression ratio and put the peak rpm where you would want it for a Berkeley A impeller.  501 stoker kits can be inexpensive.

Good info  . I will look around at some stroker kits, the only other thing i dont like about running the bbf is that it costs alot to convert to roller lifters. I planned on running a solid lifter

Money is no option, well this is my dream motor.

dart billet bbc 800+ cubic inch block
 dart big cheif heads
whipple 305 r screw charger with inter cooler
 mo-tech efi.
Saw a very similar motor run on the dyno when I did mine, with carbs and no inter cooler it went well into the 2000 hp mark. watched it put out around a 1000 hp and torgue at 1200 rpm. f n crazy. The screw charger puts out around 30% more than a roots blower and takes a lot less maintenance to keep up. This will cost you around 50-60 K. That's all.
