Man I have bad luck! The girlfriend sunk the boat this weekend on it's first real lake trip the wed before was it's maiden voyage and no problems besides to much oil in the pan. After all the work I've done for 3-1/2 months day and night everyday! :banghead: :mad: My question is is what are the chances of getting it running again? It went down in Saguaro Lake, AZ on sat. and they can't get it out till this comming sat. thats a week :banghead: We have located it and the diver said its about 50 feet deep where the oil and gas was still comming up on sun. The motor was running, but just at idle and it happened so fast that it just choked the motor out and went under! (I'm crossing my fingers that it didn't hydrolock it) but with my luck that's probably not possible. I've heard that it's ok to be under the water for a while but when it comes out is when it's crunch time on the motor. I don't even know where to start nor what it may look like when it comes up. it's a ford 460. And any help would be much appreciated!!!!

Hopefully Ralph will speak up on this one. He Sunk his boat one day and won a race the very next day, so he obviously know what it takes.

Dang that sucks, I have no personal experience here(knock on wood) I'd drain the oil, drain the carb, pull the plugs, turn it over, fill it with atf, put new plugs in, and cross my fingers. If it fires and runs , drain the atf and fill her up with oil. Details????

I have done several sunk engines, if you can't get to it right away, pickle it in diesel fuel, just fill it right to the top of the valve covers and through the carb, it won't hurt anything and is lighter than water so it keeps the air from getting to the exposed parts, which = no rust....I have let them sit like that for weeks and never had a problem (other than they stink like hell when you pull them apart)
Sucks to hear this kind of stuff, hopefully it shut down do to water on the ignition and not water in a cylinder or three. :-\

Right, that's the old school way I always learned too, if you can't do something with it immediately. Don't forget to pull the spark plugs and fill the cylinders too, after getting the water out. I just pulled apart an engine yesterday that had sunk, been drained but apparently they forgot about doing anything to the cylinders,, lots of rust.

Just me, but I'm guessing guys he plans to have it on the water like immediately! (Needs to get out to open water to dump the g/f's body! lol).
I'm at a loss here, these guys have dealt with this, only nearly sank one, myself. Personally, I would listen to GT.

What if i take it straight home, drain the oil and water out of the cylinders and air out the carb, put new oil or atf in it right away? What about the distributor and the starter are they gonna be shot? Also, they are not marine products! What about the thru the transom wet headers do they have to come off also? :mad:

when you get it on the trailer do not remove water until you are ready to complete the job. get it home pull the plugs, exhaust, valve covers and carb. crank it over by hand to get the water out of the cylinders. use wd-40 immediatly in the cylinders because you have no oil in them. you can also remove the intake man to sop up all the oil and water. change oil and filter, then re-asemble the engine. remove the drive line so you can run it on the trailer. start it up run it for a couple of minutes and change oil and filter again and repeat until the white in the oil is almost gone. the last time get the engine hot to burn off the rest of the water/condensation.
of course you will have to dry out the electronics and carb, shop air would be best.

But is also threw you a rare opportunity to strengthen or weaken the relationship with the GF. I never recognized them at the actual time they occurred, but looking back I could always say "yeah that was the day our love for one another took a turn for the ------ (whatever)."
In the middle of all the energy you have to throw at recovering the boat, take a minute to decide what and how you want to do with the unexpected relationship energy this has created. If you have strong positive feelings for her, then let her know that you forgive her and will eventually move past it. This is a kind of gift you can give her that will pay off huge later on. Or, if you really don't care that much for her then you can harness this event to clarify what is or isn't working right. Either way, I'm just saying you should harness it as long as it happened.
Sorry for maybe putting myself into something I shouldn't. Good luck with the recovery!

I'd flat out pull the motor, tear it down along with the carb, distributor and starter. Clean and check everything. Make sure you don't have a bent rod or 3.
I hate to think of the crap in the valve cover area and pan... not to mention the issues with electronics.
I would not want to pump that crap up through my bearings. It's in the oil pump too.
It's not a 2 cycle, if you try to cheap it and blow it up where will you be? This would cost you more now but may save you a lot later.
Just my 2 cents. Better safe than sorry, and I bet you'll sleep better too.

you will know if it has a bent rod the first time you fire it and it will have cost you some time and an oil change. the starter may work and it may not ??? get it out and blow with shop air

Yup, bent rods and valves will show their ugly face the minute you try and fire it up, I would think.

I am by no means trying to jamb my opinion down anyones throat...But, Ralph's boat was in the water for mere minutes, this thing sounds like it will have been in the water for three or four days, there is a difference.....It sounds like it is sitting on the bottom too, water and sand will be everywhere.....
IMHO a tear down will save you some grief in the end. Maybe try to get it running first, then a teardown? I dunno :-\

Now I say from absolutely no experience :screwy: with sunken boats (just dont get me started on falling out of a boat ;D) but I did fill the cylinders with water through the exhaust ::)
Unplug it, drain oil, remove valve covers and spark plugs, and carb, maybe intake for sand and grime, turn it over by hand, you can see if push rods are bent/not opening enough. spray with oil in cylinders. Dry all electronic parts and carb. drain fuel tanks, maybe even connect a external gas tank . Refill with oil and new filter. Spin it a few times without the spark plugs in. Look and listen and decide if it might be safe to try and start it. Fire the SOB up for a min or 2. Then drain the oil and change the filter again. (basicly the same as Ralph's)
Mine sheared a dist pin when it hydrolocked... got it running at the lake with a cotter pin enough to get back to the trailer maybe a mile away :o

While your spinning the engine w/ the plugs out leave the filter off and put a catch can down till you see clean oil.

I caught a chine and rolled my Daytona at a circle race at Castaic once. We got it back on the trailer pulled the plugs and drained the oil and gas. New oil, WD-40 everywhere and turned over the motor first with a breaker bar by hand then with the dried out starter. Refueled it, put the plugs back in and had it ideling in 30 minuets. Let it heat up and that steamed the residual water out of the oil. The next monday tore it down to a short block and checked the bearings, all good. Motor lasted the rest of the season when one of the aluminum rods let go (not the fault of the sinking, the fault of the guy who thought he could use those rods so long...me).

I live near an ATV Park in Missouri. The first warm day of spring last year my buddy and i took his ATV's up to the park and went riding. I am much more of a boat guy and was soon over my head on the trails. As i crested the top of a very steep hill i noticed that 10 foot in front of me was the end of the hill and on the other side was a lake. :o Luckily for me i had no hesitation about saving my life and bailed off, but the bike proceeded to crash down into the freezing water. Long story short, after swimming the bike across the lake (the side i was on was too steep to climb) we were able to get it back to the car. We drained the bike, replaced the oil, started it, and repeated this cycle until the oil didn't look like a milkshake.
My buddy said that his wife still hasn't noticed that her brand new ATV had been submerged. Luckily large tires kept it from sinking otherwise i would have been waiting for divers too. ;D Best of luck to you i, understand your uncetainty.

For all anyone knows it may be laying upside down it 5 feet of sludge...
I really (IMO) think you should tear it down and spend a week dry docked cleaning the fuel tanks, checking the engine, etc. There will be a pile of etc's...
The time could save you a pile of money in the long run.
Spin the big wheel and run her, would scare the crap out of me.
Remember this isn't a dip, it's a sinking.

Oh and for Dr. Phill... she's probably mad at him for letting her drive a defective boat!
If you think you'll ever make points that way I bet your in for a big disappointment ;D

Thanks to all of you for your input on this subject! It has given me a pretty good idea of what I need to do. First I have to see the damn thing come out of the water! :'( it's driving me nuts waiting till fri or sat till I even see what I'm getting myself into! :banghead:

I let my GF drive the boat one time and one time only :banghead: She it a bridge and just so happens the pillar she decided to hit had a piece of angel iron about 2 x 2 x 1/4 sticking out hit the bow at about the one o'clock mark sliced the boat for about 18 - 20 inches looked like some took a chain saw to it. Good thing see was only going about 5 MPH and I was in the boat. Once it hit she put it to the wood I reached over in a spilt second turned the key off to stop the madness and n the same motion softly removed her from the drivers seat started the boat and drove like a mad man back to the trailer. I got in a bit of trouble as I blew through a no wake zone but did not care to much I did not want the bow in the water. The water cops where cool about it once they saw why i did what i did. Needless to say she will not nor has she asked to drive the boat again.

Hey Guys im Cadillac's brother that also worked day and night on this boat. When he told me it went down, I felt like droping to my knees and crying. I'm not even gonna try and explain what happened because I wasnt there, but with the details ive heard it sounds like a freak accident, Could happen to anyone (i mean any chick) driving a boat. Lesson learned on my brothers part. Id like to just post the pics of the boat so you can see what is 50ft down right now. This was the first time we took it out on the test run...Like he said everything ran awsome cept there was a bit to much oil in the pan but from what I heard from my bro the Boat ran awsome after we drained a bit of the oil..

x2....took jenn out on mead sunday and got her used to driving it. she still needs some slow speed practice, but shes got the 'pedal to the metal' part down. ;D

Ok here goes! She was driving good straight, back and forth, not to fast or anything she was just getting a little feel of it, but it was choppi and big a$$ ocean liners were going by putting up huuggee swells in the main part of the lake. Which is when she decided she was gonna do doughnuts. :screwy: She got around one time and I yelled at her don't do that just go straight and that's when my friend that was in the back seat yelled, go straight, go straight! Of course she went around that last time and he said holy sh*t go go go!!! She looked back and of course took her foot out of it and froze, which you know, about 20 gallons of water came over the transom and sides. It took about 2 seconds and the entire motor was under water, and choked out the motor! :'( Within another 2 seconds the bow was coming up in the air really fast! We all jumped out, and within a minute 2 boats came to our rescue. Once we made sure that everyone was ok, I asked the age old question? Do you have a rope so we can tow it back in to shollow water? You know, the fu@ked up part was the 2 boats that came to help us not one of them had a fu@king rope. :banghead: I wanted to throw up looking at my boat with it's bow straight up in the air I couldn't even talk I lost all brain function! :screwy: Then the other guy we flagged down didn't have a goddamn rope either, at this point I was at a loss for words!! :banghead: I cannot believe people don't believe that a fu@king rope is important on a boat, especially 3 different people!!!! :mad: And the shitty part was just 5min before this whole thing happened these cool ass jet boat guys that we were hanging out with at the sand bar in the back were right at the rocks with us and had left to go home. I got back to the dock still wanting to throw up, and saw those guys loading up their boat and told them what happened and they looked at me like deer in headlights! He said fu@k that and literally backed his jet boat back in to the water and said lets go it bobs under the water for like 30min. So he grabbed a ROPE and we went to try and find it , but no luck! :'( I thanked those guys up and down cause they were the most concerned and actually felt my pain you could tell!! So long story short, in the end I was a dumb ass and am re-living this horrible experience over and over in my head, but I am very thankful that none of us were hurt or worse!

LOL, a lot of the times the women drive boats better than the men, there's no ego to contend with so you don't have to worry about the better halves blowin shit up...
The biggest problem with the jetboats is the lack of "control" ;D
I look at it this way, she don't drive, I don't drink or ski. :sly:

Sorry to hear about the whole thing. I agree, who in their right mind would be out on a lake without a rope?
And that's my biggest problem with Saguaro, the "Cruise Ships", lol. Still sore from that ride. (Albeit, my fault for trying figure out a way to open it up a bit for more than 5 hours, but still, lol)
Planning on taking my bigger boat up there on Saturday morning to see how it does, if i can be of any help, let me know. PM'ing my cell to ya.

this post is not to intend to flame you or make you feel bad about your mistakes....its only to help you understand where things went wrong in this situation....
I wouldnt blame 'big a$$ ocean liners' on this one....it was just a simple rookie move. you said she was doing donuts....this means she was creating wakes that were slamming into eachother like a big old washing machine. i have done this myself and seen waves get to over 4' high....very dangerous for a low freeboard boat such as yours if you dont avoid the disaster you just created.
male, female, friend, brother, etc....i dont care who....this could have happened to any rookie driver. we all started somewhere. we all learn from our mistakes. trust me, ill be the first to admit myself of my past screw ups.
im glad everyone is ok. i hope you get your boat back in some sort of restorable condition. post up some pics of your rescue and the aftermath.

Hey Cadillac, I feel your pain, as far as the rope thing goes, I always carry one or two with me and have used then to help other boaters who were stranded, I wish every boater would carry a rope . Since you have had time to regroup your thoughts about your sunken boat have you thought about getting boat insurance, Heck I don't even know if boat insurance will cover something like a sunken boat.... I bought boat insurance just for the thought of a towing accident, I think I will ask my boat insurer of they cover a sunken boat .....Shit Accidents happen

Yea Im going with him for the recovery so imma make sure to take pics of the whole rescue. I just hope its in decent shape. Gotta Hope for the best but expect the worse I guess. We'll see what happens. And thanks everyone for the help

Quagga's and Zebras have only been found in Lake Pleasant around here, so far as I know, all six of the SRP lakes are clean so far, but the guages will be liquid filled for sure!
Don't mean to poke fun at your pain, truly. That's a huge investment to go like that, nearly did the same thing myself at Mead, rookie mistakes. (Different circumstances, but still, closer than I wanted it) :banghead:
Again, I'll be up there anyway if all this goes down on Saturday, and I can help, maybe.

I have taken a couple over the back by circle'n too fast to return to a downed skiier. Made me nervous and actually caused a short? once that shut the boat off and wouldn't restart for a few mins. I can see how this could easily happen. Sorry to hear it ended with a HARD lesson learned. Good Luck on the recovery and I am happy to hear no one got hurt more than some pride.

Got the boat hitched, loaded up and out the door as of NOW! Will let you guys know what happens from my end when I get back. Cadillac hasn't called me or let me know anything. Mighta been resurected yesterday for all I know.

in short, no. salvage rights dont apply to land locked waterways.
i had a lawyer friend of mine look into this when the 'later' thread over on hotboat was going on...he said theres a national law that applies to all unless theres state or local law that says otherwise. of course if you are a LICENCED salvage company you can pull it up and put a lein on it for the salvage fee.
'later' was a guy that sunk his boat at piru and begged for donations to get it up...he got a couple grand if i recall then never brought it up...so a few of us were going to pull it up and sell it to get back the peoples money. as far as i know...either it was all a fib or the boat is still on the bottom of piru about 150' down.

You also have to keep in mind that any ill effects from environmental issues go to the registered owner. He could be charged with the pollution issues, if any. They normally do not if it was deemed an accident, but the chance is always there.
The "finders keepers law" is a factor on rivers that reach the ocean, but like Brad said, not if a landlocked body of water.

'later' was a guy that sunk his boat at piru and begged for donations to get it up...he got a couple grand if i recall then never brought it up...so a few of us were going to pull it up and sell it to get back the peoples money. as far as i know...either it was all a fib or the boat is still on the bottom of piru about 150' down.

I just hope they can find the boat. I talked to my brother (scuba dives) he told me it would
likely be extremely hard to see down there. He told me about having to "feel around" looking for
a --dy one time. He wasn't the diver that found it as he said "Thank God"
Throw in the under water currents it's hard to tell where the boat landed.
I wish they would find it. The suspense is murder. I dooo feel the pain.

One thing we do in the river boats is to use a floaty on a 150' rope and tie it off to the stringer or bow eye, this way if the boat goes down, you can find and retrieve it. This really sucks.

This surprises me though, and been bugging me. The lake is 10 times busier on the weekend, why are they doing it on a Saturday? Would it not make sense to do it during the week? AND, no O/T for the guys doing it.

Yeah so far he said it's gonna happen sat morning and if not sun morning or both! At this point all I can do is hope!!! I just at least want closure or the boat out of the water preferably the later. My mind is gone at this point, :screwy: but with alot of hope! I've just been looking into the things I can do for the motor, if it's hydrolocked, and the interior. The problem is is that i just finished the boat about $5500 total, with the price of the boat being $2400 and all the little shit that adds up. It gets to the wallet fast ya know! And I'm far from having a ton of money, so I'm hopeing that I can rebuild this before the season is over! (IF THEY EVEN FIND IT) :'( trying to keep the hope....

Here's the pics I got. When I first saw it, Thanks everyone for your faith in me, lol.
I had just launched both boats and the pics were from the dock (Shoulda told becca to zoom in) They almost flipped it and sank it again, lol, as it turned almost all the way on it's side.
Kinda neat, they towed it in still a little underwater with the white baggies apparently stuffed in the bow and under the transom somehow. Asked if they needed help, they said no but couldn't find the owner, so I dunno if Cadillac got his boat back or not.

I damn near had my bud pull one of the trucks down with my trailers to at least get it out of the water.
I can't imagine what the bill is for this stuff, maybe Ralph can. I can only guess there may be Hazmat issues as well.

Edit, actually, the county and state would have nothing to do with it. It's worse because it's in the Tonto National forest, so then falls under the Feds and the BLM. The state only supplies the law enforcement through Fish and Game, for which they get grants for doing.

Only been a day guys, his baby went down, I'm sure it wasn't cheap to recover it, and in this economy, may be more to this than meets the eye.
But yeah, I'm dying to know too! Why start it and not follow through. I'm a follow through nut, and am kicking myself every day for no progress on the Yellow Submarine (actually causing me some stress), but I'm having too damn much fun with the ones I have running right now!!!!

Yeah SORRY guys! Just been busy as hell! The reason I wasnt there was I had some family matters that I had to take care of Sun morn and he didn't call me till 12:30 so I had to haul ass all the way from Gilbert to get there. I picked it up around 1 or 1:30 it had just finished draining. :'( Got it home and it was crunch time! Tore all the interior out of it, man did it stink like dirty pu@$y!!!! But all in all was not in too bad of shape, if thats possible to say after 2 weeks of 83 feet deep! Some pretty rough scratches on the rear where it was stuck in 2 feet of mud and wedged in between a tree, but no holes, thank god! The diver said it took over 1500lbs of air bag pressure just to get it out of the mud. I guess it was straight up and down just stuck like a lawn dart! My buddy came over and helped me try to save the motor he's been through this motor saving before so I'm glad he was there. We pulled all the plugs and started draining the oil or water should I say then he sprayed copious amounts of PB in the cylinders! Then we hand cranked the motor and it actually was turning great, BLASTING water out of the cylinders! Sprayed a bunch more PB into the cylinders and put new oil in it, then had to let it sit because it was already midnight and had to be up for work at 4am! :banghead: Yesterday we got the carb all cleaned and dryed out and all the electronics cleaned. Still can't believe the distributor, the starter and all the gauges still work not that I'm keeping the gauges they are f'd up looking! So anyways, the electric fuel pump was done and of course every place was already closed :banghead: so we just dumped gas in the carb, after going and buying a new batt :mad: and she barked and kept on barking, she really really wants to come back to life!! I was suprised and happy ;D :'( at how easily she wanted to fire up! So, I think after I get that new fuel pump and constant good fuel she'll run (fingers crossed tightly) after work! We'll let her run for like a minute or 2 and start draining oil again until I have clean oil. Thank you Ray for those pictures that is KICK ASS of you, you're the man!!!! As too the rest of you, I'm very thankful for all the concern and all the help! I really wanted to be badly but, sh!t happens right! I love that Jet Boaters are truley like a family and cool as hell when you get to know us, and not just loud, annoying, and pointless boats on the water like everybody thinks right! Fu@k them all! I'll keep all of you posted as to if she comes back to LIFE!

Figure out what you need. I have guages in the Saguaro and in this Hallet Brad just gave me (Faded, but prolly all work fine to get it through the season). Didn't catch how your seats were in there, but maybe someone has some laying around....( eh hem ...Aquaholic.........)
I got a girl that works for me in Chandler that is an upholsterer and artist and gawd knows what else she does well (She's kinda scarey and weird), but she'll work for cheap on your seats, or replacements if we can come up with them ( ah hem!....Aquaholic). lol.
Big thing is the engine. Lemme know how it works out, I'm a phone call and a heart beat away from you, a garage full of stuff I may or may not be able to ID, and now a yard full of boats! (Hallett is already going to get underway at another garage, once the blue one comes back, I have no room for it, lol) On that note, I'm thinking a SCJB Boat, I mean the graphics, colors, skull, everything all over it.

YAY...We got the motor fully running today. Cept theres a problem with the carb...The gas is just pouring into it like theres no restriction at all. Just overflows. So we have to figure this carb out. BUt the good news is that we got it started and have changed the oil twice as of right now.. gonna have to get more oil and oil filters tomorrow as wel as a new fuel filter. Im sure my brother will be on later to explain more.

if its a holley, take the side's off and check the floats and needles and seats. There may be some dirt or other crap in the needle and seat or the floats could be filled with water. My carb was just pissing fuel down the barrels and i got a 30 dollar rebuild kit and all i used from the kit was the needle and seats, and some basic gaskets. Its pretty easy, takes like 20 mins and can save you from having to rebuild the carb.

Nope Follow Andy's advice. I can guarantee it's a dirt issue in the carb.

Sorry I've kept everyone outta the loop on the site, just been busy as hell working my ass off to get this goddamn thing back on the lake! I have changed a few things and done some things better this time around. My brother or I will be posting pics real soon nothing special but she's definitley back and working great SO FAR! :mad: still cannot believe that this thing is still able to run after being 83ft deep for 2 weeks just crazy to me :screwy: Did have big plans for a new crazy motor set up but that fell through it would have been super unique a 500ci caddy twin turbo it was sick as hell!!!!! But for now the 460 is still a fighter to stay alive and sure she'll get me through anything at this point! I have next weekend planned so far but we'll see. I really wanted to go out during the week when it calm, but can't get off work so I guess her next resurected maiden voyage will have to be with all the craziness of SAG on the weekend, including roll bar boats and lake lice. :banghead: I will post it up when I'm toatally lake ready with pics! Thanks again for all the support guys!
