Lifter, valve or pushrod wtf
« on: September 23, 2012, 03:23:53 PM »
Ran it this mornin at Elsinore. Cruised around the lake once like a pace-car lap then I went around again throttling hard 4500 rpm with bursts of 5-5100. Long ways around the lake.. pulled into Coors cove and heard it clickin away! Oil pressure perfect, water temp 140*

First sounded like a spark plug boot was loose, they was all good. I thought better get back on the trailer. I was idling back to the ramp from the cove and noise faded. No more tic...

Had to know if it was a fluke so I mashed my foot down the carb and drove it hard for half a minute or so, rather have shit hit the fan here than in parker cause I got time to fix it before that trip. Noise still gone, gauges are all happy. Gave it one more burst and noise came back so I limped the hell off the water.

Why would the noise come and go? Can a lifter stick and unstick whenever it wants?

Any of you's hear valve train noise after lightly punishing your equipment?

I like to have faith in my shit and know that its good halfway between needles and laughlin..

With 600 hours I think it deserves a valve job, new lifters and/or pushrods, springs, guides and whatever else wants to come out and play...

Any clues as to what your oil temperature was?

Lifter noise can come and go if you have a lifter going south (could be debris, broken spring, worn out plunger....Is this a roller cam or a flatty?

You could also be floating some stuff causing a lifter to "collapse"..

Good luck my man...

I'd imagine oil temp was around 160* if I turn it off for a few minutes and key on to accessory, the temp gauge is usually around 160 though I always adjust my gate valve to see water at 140* VR20-50 oil is what I've been using.

I don't know if its a roller, '94 marine power bbc...

I'll probably send an oil sample to Blackstone next time I change it.

Good time to freshen heads or just replace lifters?

Think I'll pull vc's and dump oil filters and see what I can see. I'm getting excited about removing the heads.

Good point, Daniel. When I first heard the ticking when I shoved onto the beach I turned it off, dove under the hatch and pulled the dipstick.

It was just over the hash mark for add one quart... I really don't think it was low since I added to it the last time I went local to Silverwood and I couldn't possibly burn a quart in five hours. I thought nothing of the low level today since I checked oil within 20 seconds of shutting engine off and didn't give any time for oil headed back to the pan.

I'll check it after work tomorrow. That'd be sweet if it was just low on oil... But is it even possible for lifters to notice that? Would the oil get that much hotter and thinner being low?

You have a gauge for oil temp on yours?

My first thought, based on how you said you ran it, was the same as GT Jets, oil temp.

If you have a large capacity pan, being a quart low should not be an issue.  Oil temp can be caused by extended running at higher RPM and load.  If you made a lap at Elsinore at 4500 RPM and up, it's basically the same as racing it.  Personally, I like straight weight oil for "racing", rather than multi grade.  I know the Valvoline is the easiest racing oil to get your hands on, but in my opinion there are better choices.

With 600 hours, if you have been running it that hard all of it's life, it could be getting kind of tired?

Honestly, I don't think that boat has ever been ran that hard for that long as it did today, lots of flat water and no females aboard.

The intermittent ticking today may just be an indication of "Thats not what it was engineered for", and probably won't happen again if not driven like an asshole for extended periods.

It's a good runnin stock motor, not even giving the exception that its got some hours on it.

I could justify havin the heads done at this point with all I've invested so far and just to have more peace of mind.

Daniel

Oil was in fact one quart low.

I know I'm losing oil from either rusty valves or rusted rings below the passenger side exhaust riser. But losing a whole quart in six hours?

The same side that has two cylinders 15psi lower than the other six is the same side that gets an oily transom :sly:

Edit: the side with the two cyl low on compression is opposite the side with the tick-tock.

I have a 94 marine power 454 as well. . These motors stock come with 5 quart pans and being 1 quart low im sure isnt helping the lifter noise. Also 600 hours burning 1 quart i think is normal. My experience with engine lifter noise is this... if you have correct engine oil level, and it makes lifter noise. it needs lifters..  especially if its a bmw 6 cylinder lol . As far as big blocks go i personally have not replace lifters or anything related on one yet. Anyways keep us updated cuz i got the same motor.  ^-^ Good luck

1 qt would make a difference depending on your oil pan and where your pick up is located. I usually listen for my lifters every time I fire up one of my bb chevys. Usually in my chevelle noisy lifters after about 5 mins of run time means im about a 1-1.5 qts low. And with 600+ hours and you saying two cylinders are little lower I would think you have a little more blow by than stock and running 4500+ for extended periods I wouldn't see why 1 quart loss wouldn't be expected. After 5 trips down the 1/4 with my 496 I have burned off about a quart and that's a big block with no more than 50 miles or 10 hours on run time.

As it turns out, the boat runs great and lifters don't make noise when it has the correct amount of oil.
