Well doing a bit more research some folks are using both since the ign switch may not pull enough power. Anyone else using both slave and starter mounted sole kids.

I use the ford type solenoid on the back of the pass side head, for the main power heading to the starter. The GM solenoid is wired direct, (little wire right to the big battery cable) this keeps the starter 'cold', or not live unless the starter is engaged/spinning. I do this on all the GM trucks, too. It helps with heat soak on the starter/solenoid

On the daycruiser (starter eater) I had 2 starters,top mount and standard GM location, and when one quit, I'd swap the solenoid wires, and use the other starter for the rest of the day

left (large) terminal > to battery
right (large) terminal > to starter

left (small) terminal > from key switch

On the gm starter solenoid, I use a solid connection (read: steel) between the large cable terminal and the small ('S') terminal

I was going to run a new wire from the ignition switch back to the block. Installing the hard start solenoid sounds like a better solution. Except for the fact that starter is a Pita to get to.   Intermittent starting problems, definitely have seen voltage drop back to block when ignition is switched on. Do both or just solenoid?
