I know I'm late to the discussion, but one fact to consider is the RPM range. While a specific carb may make more power on the dyno, you need to be careful and look at the RPM it made it at. If the engine makes 75 more HP but it was 1000 RPM higher, you may not be able to use it.

Also, when looking at carbs, the intake style plays a big part. A stock 454 with a dual plane may like a 850 best, but throw a single plane on the same engine, and it will probably perform better with a 750.

Once you start getting into large cams and such, your airflow requirements can go through the roof, but you also have to turn the rpm's too. Jets have the handicap of the hard stop rev limiting impellor unlike cars that have nothing to really limit the RPM.

IMHO - Sleeper you need a bigger carb than 1250 :-)

My 528 is running 1660 CFM, and it is under carbed. Usually if you have to jump more than 5-6 jet sizes up from stock, you can gain more by switching carbs.

Yeah I went over it with Patrick, he has supplied 4 Engine Master's competition winners, builds carbs for Jon Kaases race engines and Tony Bishoff and Billy Glidden to name a few. For my ski-boat he recommended his 1,200. He could put a different bigger carb on it to make more power but I still need it to do other things too.

What are you reving it to ? And where did you find a 1,660 CFM Carb. I doubt that it's under carb'd.

One the jet rule, this engine we pulled 10 jet sizes out of the carb when it was on the dyno. The head work my friend did made it one of the most effcient engines I've seen on a dyno. The BSFC's were .366  this  engine combo made 80 more hp than the one before it and used less fuel doing it.

I'm late to the party also. So lets turn it up a notch. I was thinking my engine is over Carbed. Just a lil ol 327 .30 over hydraulic roller, a B&M 144 blower with duel 700 carbs turning a B impeller. Now can vacuum be trusted in the way's described before hand with a blower? I was always told on a marine engine the blower make's instant boost. cursing along say at 2500-3500 hg reading will be 5 to 1 range until you open it up more and more until it starts to go into boost range. when your in the 4K to 4500 range it will be on two lbs or boost.
