took boat out and only was turning 3000 rpms wot
« on: April 23, 2009, 01:52:28 PM »
Hi yall kinda new to the jet boat scene and just needed some help on a couple of issues. I have a 20ft. 1979 omega with a 460 and a jaccuzzi wj in it. I have a edelbrock performer 360 intake with an edelbrock 750. Just put a new pertroniks dizzy and coil in it. It has a dooley 10 quart oil pan, dont know what cam. I just took boat out yesterday and the boat feels like its moving good but tach only says its 3000 rpms when we were full bore floored also the oil press guage said around 40 psi when on trailer and stayed that way until im on it then down below 20 too almost a little above 0? all guages are new but senders are not. all new oil 20-50 and 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. I see everybody else is turning at least 4300-5500 anywhere in there so are all my guagues full of shit or is there issues? also white smoke coming out of valve cover holes. Any help would be great. And there is no rope or cat in the jet already checked that! ha!  :banghead:

Could be a lot of things causing it. The learning curve never quits. On one of mine it's likely caused by the points and/or valve springs. we'll nail it down and fix it next week. (I'm thinking a complete MSD or Mallory unit w/dizzy during the intake change and then see).

If you do have an AA impeller, pull it out immediately and ship it to me before you hurt yourself!  >:D

Is this a new boat to you--the first time out? or
How did it run before the changes?
Is the new tach set for 8 cylinders?

Have no clue what impeller is in it nor did i know that there is a setting on the tach for different cylinders. How do i find out what impeller i have? Also my main concern is how do i know if there is too much or too little oil?  :banghead: Could this be what is causing my oil issue of only 40 psi on the gauge and then when on it down to almost 0 but the boat ran fine i thought all day! A little hiccup when mashing the pedal down but after that she was good never showed hot at all. Also the dipstick is after market cheap chrome but the guy before me must have put the dooley pan on and then stamped it for full at 10 qts with a metal stamper on the dipstick. but it ran on the trailer fine before i changed his jet black oil to good oil at exactly 10 qts which does go right to his full line on the dipstick, but then it started smoking a little out of the valve cover breathers. When on it the smoke gets worse for a while and spits a little out of the dipstick tube? Do i have too much oil or did I not put enough in so its starving? Or worse case are the bearing going out or possibly the rings? I have not done a compression test yet.

Try manual pressure gauge the sending unite might not be the right one for the gauge. the manual will tell the true pressure and it will be more than accurate than  ( eli   trick you  gauge  ) :banghead:  ;D

This is an excellent post.(all of the above) 3K with a 21 daycruiser would barley be planing. Gps speed ? Did it run better before the electronic conversion????

Try another tach.  I replaced mine because I installed an MSD box and my max rpm dropped from 4900 to about 4300 (now my speed/RPM are more understandable).

Do you have a speedometer or a GPS to compare speed with the rpm?

If the sensors to match the new gauges are available, get them.  And 429heads is correct about using a mechanical gauge for testing.

Keith and Elwood are right on the mechanical thing. Did that on the Moo boat right after I got back from Mead, (Crewcheif's advice) only to find that yeah, the oil pressure was about 115 (Prolly due to the oil I run and over building the oil system in the thing).

Fixed that with the remote dual filter ass'y and remote oil cooler, but still, good information. (My example is an extreme).

Now I run about 75-85, which is high, but manageable.

Ray

On the tach, dunno. Too much seat time in cars and boats to let a tach BS me. Double and triple check your wiring, and yeah, check to make sure it's in 8 cylinder mode. I've never seen a faulty tach, only faulty wiring, installation, or reader,  ;D But I'm sure they exist.

I can bet it isn't the mode switch that is faulty - otherwise you would be turning 10K.

A 4 cylinder has half as much firing as an 8, so if a tach is set to 4 cyl on an 8, - the tach will read double.

How fast did you feel like you were going? Fast enough or man this is slow?

Yeah I will have to try the mechanical i guess and it felt like i was moving for sure. The gauges are the Hardin Marine brand which I dunno if they are good or not but I guess you get what you pay for! Also the volt was only showing 10 volts so I put a multimeter to it and all gauges are getting around 12.69 volts or around there and then the volt just stop working completely so maybe faulty gauges all around but i find that hard to believe!

The same happened to my tach, when I also changed my ignition to full MSD with the 6A box. From about 4800 to 4300 with a new rebuilt mild 454 BBC. It feels that its moving quicker, and I haven't gps'd it yet. I havent checked the tach gauge with a timing/rpm meter yet either to see if my tach is reading correctly. Sounds like you fixed your problem and now I need to fix mine.  ;D

I currently have a gaffig tach right now. What type of tach gauge are you using?  (All my gauges are autometer, except this one..)

ok so your saying your not believing your gauges and what not...im begining to think wiring...it never hurts to delete and anything questionable...i see you mentioned new gauges...did you wire them? did the previous owner wire them? the answer could be simple...time to pull out the diagrams ...its actually pretty simple to make it right...that would be the first thing i would look at...

I'm sure that my motor will be over 4300 at WOT, so it could be the pump (A cut.) The only wiring I havent re-done is the Tach and starter, both of which work fine. when we broke in the motor, my tach wasn't hooked up and we were just using the snap-on timing/rpm gun to adjust everything. Until I use the gun, I will think my rpm's are off on the gauge. CrewCheif mentioned he swapped out tachs after installing his MSD kit, so I'll wait for him to chime in.

The reason I changed tachs is because my old tach would not function with the MSD box.  But, with the old tach reading 4900rpm and my speed in the low 50's didn't make since.  I installed a new Autometer tach and now my RPM is at 4300 WFO  :'(

But like I said before, now my speed and RPM are more understandable.

Now, as of tonight I know why my speed and RPM are so low...

... leak down shows +/- 60%

I think I need an engine!
