took the rogers out had a blast and blew the motor!
« on: May 26, 2014, 07:00:21 PM »
Took my new to me Rogers out for memorial had some sputter to it all day Friday got the bugs worked out on Saturday and Sat afternoon started running it a lil hard and it sounds like I spun a rod bearing.  Kinda torn on slapping a used motor in it and going easy on it for the season or I might have access to a sbc  with camel hump heads tunnel ram Bassetts and a 750 dp. I'm told it's a4 bolt main and a 383 but can't confirm that.  I want a motor I can run hard with out worrying about oiling and blowing up every weekend.

If you spend some money on the internals for 800 HP and make 650, this would be the result.

Whatever you think is "good enough" typically isn't...

That's the case in my little world anyways...

For now I'm gonna look for something used and cheap untill I can decide how much I like the boat and how much I wanna spend. Would really like to swap in a lq4 (6.0 chevy) with a carb on it and the basic performance mods but that will takesome homework and some fab work.

If you wished to stay in the small block-ish realm... then that would be about the hot ticket. Obviously, box-stock out of the wrecking yard is just a problem waiting to find the perfect time to happen... but with a few mods, they can be a great, reliable power plant. The other upside is... basically as far as mounting and hooking it up... you need to fab a front motor plate... and come up with headers... other than that, the rear part of the motor will use the same mounts and drive as the sbc.

Really like the idea off a healthy for bolt main sbc. People are telling me I'm retared but i see a ton of race boats run them. Never see one in a drag boat but in a lot of other forms of racing. I want a motor that can handle a 10 minute hot lap id be willing to sacrafice some power for a motor that will hold together. I got this boat to pretend I'm a jet sprint racer not to do the ocasional 1000ft drag race and spend therest of the day on shore.

I wouldn't say your retarded... or even remotely so... there is nothing wrong with wanting to build something to handle bitchen, rev to the moon, and get after it lap after lap... I kinda dig it.

But... If you're wanting a sbc to buzzzzzzzzzzz lap after lap like johnnynascar... then you're gonna need to spend some loot on a stout bottom end, some really good valvetrain parts, and even of you're gonna pit it all together yourself... properly machined/balanced/and heads setup just right... any corners cut in these areas and it just won't last. Built small blocks do like to rev... but in a jet boat and in an endurance sort of application, there is just no "cheap" way to go about it... it either is going to be right and work great... or not and won't. What is a bad-ass build for a hotrod street dragnasty car typically ain't gonna cut the mustard in an endurance jet... apples and oranges.

Seriously though, I hate to be the negative guy... I know you said you wanted to find something used and cheap... and I'm sure someone will chime in and say how their buddy's third cousin's neighbor took a 305 out of a station wagon, slapped a 850 on it and the biggest cam ever made in it and put it in his circle race jet and won every event in every class and set all the records that have ever been recorded... :o :o but the simple truth is... if you want a stout sb, that can run hot lap after hot lap and make it through a season or three... you're gonna have some coin tied up in it.

The ls route is a good way to achieve several things at once... but even then... endurance oriented application, rods and pistons need to be upgraded... as well as cam and valvetrain... but to be honest... I think in the grand scheme of things... even building it up nice, you'd be cost and benefit ahead of a typical iron sbc... but that's just my opinion.

No matter which way you decide to go... after doing this for a few years and gaining a little bit of knowledge along the way... I found the cheapest way to go is doing it right the first time... and it hurts a lot less than having to go through the effort and expense of doing it twice, three times... etc...

Nothing wrong with a sbc. hell i have thought about doing one.  i always wanted to build a 335 which is a 350 block with a 327 crank! lots of torque! Now like the last guy said you HAVE TO HAVE IT BUILT UP or it wont last . there is just nothing cheap about owning a boat.

Just asking...  I am trying to forget everything I know about small blocks, but don’t the 350 and 327 both share a common bore size of 4-inches?  I wanted to do a 377 (350 crank in a 400 block) because that is what Zora did at one time, but everybody keeps saying, “Put the right crank in there.”  Anyway, I am over the small block thing.

Cheers,

Joe

The biggest problem was that the 400 block is a POS. We ran a Donovan 410 with a Callies crank in a jet, the weight loss was the largest advantage IMHO I could literally lift the long block off the back of the pick up and onto a tear down cart. But there again, we're talking about a $28,000 motor.

If anyone out there is interested I have a four bolt small block with a GM forged crank and a set of forged pop ups complete I can make a deal on. It was all good used stuff that we put together for a spare. It really needs to be balanced, but I have enough crap to put it together.... I believe the motor is .030" overbore with a standard crank.

I kept thinking I was going to build a rat trap, but never had the energy.  :sly:

Hell, I even have a new in the box marine flat hydraulic cam for it... Proven 325 HP.
