Launched today boat ran fine for the first 5 mins then it started to expiriance bad vibration.... slowed down the engine temp and pressure was fine but had a rough idle... pressed the gas and felt like it was restricted would Rev and randomly stop... took the boat out and checked pump had nothing stuck in there so I'm stumbled... may I add a I noticed a whistle at high rpms before it started running like shit! Suggestions anyone?
-
Vacuum leak maybe?
-
Bad thrust bearing on the pump?

My gut said driveline/pump issue. But I am not smart and drive a ford.
-
I just started it in the driveway which it does just fine and it's shaky and struggles when I Rev it
-
Disconnect the drive line and see if the problem goes away. That will tell you if it's engine or the pump.

Bingo! Was just about to type that! Like your boat to mine, you were faster.

sounds like an idea... of course that requires pulling the engine right?

Most likely no. You should be able to just unbolt this guy.

Have you checked to make sure all of your plug wires are on tight and/or that there's no crossfiring?

this is my set up. Just unbolting the u joints and it should slide back enough to run your engine. Hope it's something simple good luck

I need to take the cover off but mine is prolly simular

Check all the spark plugs if it's running on less then 8 it can shake and if one isn't firing it starts to flood out the other plugs and if that's what it is it's cheap and easy fix good luck jesse

Pull the distributor cap and grab the rotor and see if it spins. Sounds like a mis fire to me.

I pulled the cap off today it didn't look in best shape but I never checked if it turned. Ordered a new rotor cap and wires hopefully thats my issue. Should it turn pretty easily?
-
So I found a cut on the red distributor wire going to the coil. Spliced it and motor turned on fine reved fine but had a hiccup when pressing gas... could this have caused my problem?

So after splicing the area of the red wire that had some kind of a slit.. reconnected it and boat seems to sound and rev back to normal... let's see how it does tomorrow out in Elsinore.... by the way vibration went away too.

So went out today everything seemed fine up until of course 5 mins into launching it started to miss fire and bog really bad no type of power. If I give it no gas it dies... by the time I got to launch ramp I started it up to video the symptoms and of course nothing wrong it started fine and rev good. I then just pulled it out... suggestion right now in the driveway it starts and sounds fine so it's hard to trouble shoot suggestions?

I didnt go back and read thru the whole thread. How old is that coil? Could be a possibility of the coil getting hot and breaking down. Once you let it sit, it cools down and runs fine for a few?

It was on for about 10 mins idling out the dock drove it easy for bout 3 mins then just complete bogging... I had to sputter it to the ramp cause no one seems to notice I'm going the wrong way sputtering and wants to help.. but anyways I had to literally tap the gas before it cut just to get back... I turn it off to get my phone to video the symptoms and it starts just fine like nothings wrong. I'm stumped, now I think it's a fuel issue?

Does it have a water separator? I had a boat with similar symptoms and it had a ton of water in the gas. Dump the separator into a clear Mason jar or something similar and see if you have any water in there.

Had water in my fuel once but it didn't want to run for shit tho. Change out points and condenser?

Have you check your primary side float level?

I'm gonna pull the water separater today see what's going on... I was also told my gas cap could be my issue. I noticed gas coming out when it's hot parked like it evaporated out... messed up my paint apparently there not sealed? Comments on that?

Not sealed goes both ways chance of getting water in the fuel also.

I'm understanding fuel system is a pressured vacuum is that correct air bubbles could cause bogging?

The only time i have seen fuel caps cause a problem is when they are not vented. Water maybe your problem i would start with checking your fuel for water. Then i would check to see if you are getting fuel in your bowls properly. Setting still the water well be pretty stable at the bottom of the bowls. moving will get it moving as well.

Boat sits more bow up in the water than on the trailer. Tanks have water in them and the pick ups are at the back of the tanks.
Grab three or four bottles of Siloo and dump them in, change the separator, bring an extra and go run the snot out of it.

Jack the front up a little so the boat is seating close to how it does in the water let it seat that way for a while if you have an electric fuel pump take the gas line off the carb and pump some gas into a clear container let it set a few minutes if there's water you will see it like a bubble at the bottom if you don't have an electric fuel pump you can by a small one and hook it up where it goes to your Mechanical pump even a little bit of water will make it run bad and when it's not under a lode it will seem fine also a weak coil will also seem fine when not under a load good luck jess

. Check needle and seat. Do you have a fuel pressure gage? I still think it is a fuel problem

Glad to hear you got your boat running good again, when I bought my boat three years ago, it came with a Petronix billet dist and the Flame Thrower coil, I figured I’d keep it even after I built a new BBC engine, I heard pretty good things about them, but after it shit on me twice, and even after I took it to Petronix in Glendora and they tested it and said it’s fine. I installed an MSD Marine system with their Pro Billet dist and never looked back. I have had it for three years now and everything has worked flawlessly. I should of invested in the MSD system right away, I’ve run their products for over 25 years and never had an issue with my Chevelle or in my 7 sec alcohol dragster. Just fuel for thought if the Petronix gives you a problem in the future again.
