So I bought a new boat few weeks back. Debating on what fuel to run.
It's a bbf 521
Aluminum trick flow head
Single carb 1150
Don't know cam specs
Says it around 10.7:1
Motors we'll build seen pics of build deff done right. Claims he ran 91 mixed with AV gas. Right now I've got straight AV gas with marvels mystery oil. In my buggy I run straight vp110 and it gets pricey. So would like opinions from people who are knowledgeable in this.
Run...
91 straight....?
91/AV
91/110vp
AV straight
AV/marvels mystery oil
110vp straight
Wanna keep the cost down but not worth hurting the motor over so I'll run any of the above just don't wanna be say running 110vp when I can get away with 91. AV gas seems a lil cheaper than vp but seems like a pain to get unless your by the river where they have it at the pump. 110 I usually have from my buggy and 91 would be awesome but don't know if it's safe to run without worrying. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks codey

I'd run straight AV gas

My dad tells me not good to run straight as it has no lubricants in it? Is this an old myth or true stuff?
-
Run some marvel's mystery oil.

So your saying AV gas is the fuel for my motor nothing mixed?? If so where do you guys all get your AV gas from?
-
I don't run it but I do know of a few places. Where do you live

Riverside airport or corona airport. There is a lot of factor you maybe fine on 91. Depends on timing and cam for exact needs.

I'll try and get cam specs but doubt he'll have them. I'd love to run 91 if I know it will take hurt the motor.

. Drop the timing back and check the plugs.

Previous owner states he built the motor so if he had to run 91 he could. Said he always mixed half 91 half AVgas when possible. Says he ran on straight 91 a few times when had to and didn't seem to ping or act funny. I'm pretty knowledgeable on motor but when it comes to fine tuning i get lost on this stuff. I'm not worried about cost as much as I am on availability.

AV gas out of the pump is very common in lake havasu. I've heard of people doing the old marvel mystery trick but I also know a lot of people who run it straight without problems. U could take some timing out of it if u could verify can specs to be sure. I've been in this same situation with the motor out of my old offroad racetruck and it sucked. Fuel costs were ridiculous at 3.5 mpg. I used to run 110 vp and 91 mix and it was a pain in the ass.

Run it on each with timing adjusted accordingly and check the plugs.

Completely true.
Aviation fuel is very "dry"
We used to run either Marvel Mystery oil at like 200:1 or Amsoil two stroke oil at 300:1.

K so I got this from previous owner.
Cam specs
.580 lift. 242 in. 246ex. @ .050. Ground on 110 C/L. In @ 106 intake.

My dad has run AV gas in his day cruiser dry with no problems with a blown injected small block at 9.1 with 15lbs of boost, on a forced induction engine you can leave the exhaust valve seals out which helps with the dry cylinder thing, a n/a deal it's not a bad idea to run some marvel in it, also AV at an airport has to be tested daily and the quality is generally better then a lot of the gas at gas stations which now contains up to 10% ethanol that can be hard on rubber seals and hoses, in my opinion, I would run straight AV with the marvel oil

I'm thinking the same that's what I ran last time only thing I worry about is availability.. Anyone got advise or suggestions on where and how.

91 with that cam and 10.7:1 is fine. Start at 32 deg timing and check plugs. I bet you'd find 36 deg of timing works too though.

That'd be awesome. I just really don't wanna hurt the motor but 10.7:1 doesn't seem like too much compression to me but no professional. What kinda power do you guys think I'm making and opinions on the setup as its new too me.
Sorry man
Trick flow heads ported & polished
Milodon stainless valves
Crane Triple valve springs
HS roller rockers
Engle cam/lifters
Ford motor craft single plane manifold port matched.
Holly 850 but really 1100 now
Eagle billet crank
Eagle H beam rods
JE billet Pistons

I'd say 700-750.

So think I'm safe on 91 pump gas to run all the time cruising and making a pass at wot. Anything you'd change on my setup. Says he thinks it's a b impeller and when I had it out it deff hooks up and gets it and it'll spin at 6,000rpm of course I was only at wot for a few seconds at a time since the motor is new to me
-
Sounds like a good package to me honestly.
-
So drop that bitch in the water, drive it like you stole it and post up a video if it. Sounds like she will run angry.
-
I run half 91 half AV with marvels in my 10.5:1 olds and never have a problem. I stop at Blythe airport on my way in every trip.

My set-up is similar, 508ci, .715 lift and 12:1, 730 hp.
I run AV with marvel. I get my fuel at French Valley Airport in Murrieta.

gonna have to run 110 when you start spraying her this year 😜
Gimme that BECKY!

91 should be fine with what U got. Run it check the plugs. If not some octane boost from Lucas. I got 13:1 run AV from the airports n do use Lucas because AV is dry. But on the lakes when I don't have AV or Race I run 93 with double octane boost n it's just fine. Just my two cents. Good luck

Think I'm gonna have to leave it alone for a year or two. Pistons are forged, but not designed for a big shot. My machinist says 125-150 only, and what good is that? It'd reduce the amount I lost by, but it would still be a loss. :(

Anything you have to do to purchase fuel there?? Or just go and fill up?

They'll let you pull your boat out there, I usually just take cans. There's a card reader at the tank, so it's pretty much serve yourself.

Can drive on the airport buddy told me you have to have a clicker to get in a gate but I've never been there.
-
Did I miss the exhaust type somewhere?
I think that cam will build a lot of cylinder pressure. I think more lift and overlap would help exploit the performance potential you have, and possibly more duration.
With that cam, I would recommend creeping up on your total timing for each fuel type slowly.

I'll probably take some heat for this...
But how does everyone feel about lead pollution from running water through your pipes when burning avgas?
In the big picture I'm sure it's not much different from just running normal petrol anyways but I'm just curious what everyone's thoughts are.

yes understandable. That thing will be a monster with some spray one day. Definitely pulls hard on the top end. 👍🏻👍🏻

I go during business hours and if I need to drive to the pump I ask them to open the gate. Normally I'll only fill a couple of cans at a time and carry them, but the guy that works in the pilot's lounge almost always tells me I should drive out.

X2 they'll open the gate so you can drive your boat in. Just go inside and talk to the guy

I will have a setup similar to 77_liberty. A shade over 11 to 1. I will be running 91 octane with spiking my tanks with 110. Will just have to find the right setup for my combo. Yay!

Say I was to do the same. When you say spike is that 1/4 or.... What's it take I always have 110 in the garage I just don't wanna waste it.... Say half and half I'd be better off just doing AVgas

I kinda like the RACRX big cube approach, but I think I'd still want to be able to spray. Gotta have a big piggy bank for that project.

Lets just say we are able to run 91 straight up without issue BUT if we spike it a little just to be safe and perhaps keep the timing a lil more then that sounds good to me. But to answer you question I am thinking just 10-20% with 110.

Let's get a video up on the site, even a link to a YouTube run would be awesome!!!
