What fuel to run???
« on: February 09, 2016, 05:46:17 PM »
So I bought a new boat few weeks back. Debating on what fuel to run.

It's a bbf 521
Aluminum trick flow head
Single carb 1150
Don't know cam specs
Says it around 10.7:1

Motors we'll build seen pics of build deff done right. Claims he ran 91 mixed with AV gas. Right now I've got straight AV gas with marvels mystery oil. In my buggy I run straight vp110 and it gets pricey. So would like opinions from people who are knowledgeable in this.

Run...
91 straight....?
91/AV
91/110vp
AV straight
AV/marvels mystery oil
110vp straight

Wanna keep the cost down but not worth hurting the motor over so I'll run any of the above just don't wanna be say running 110vp when I can get away with 91. AV gas seems a lil cheaper than vp but seems like a pain to get unless your by the river where they have it at the pump. 110 I usually have from my buggy and 91 would be awesome but don't know if it's safe to run without worrying. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks codey

My dad tells me not good to run straight as it has no lubricants in it? Is this an old myth or true stuff?

Riverside airport or corona airport. There is a lot of factor you maybe fine on 91. Depends on timing and cam for exact needs.

I'll try and get cam specs but doubt he'll have them. I'd love to run 91 if I know it will take hurt the motor.

Previous owner states he built the motor so if he had to run 91 he could. Said he always mixed half 91 half AVgas when possible. Says he ran on straight 91 a few times when had to and didn't seem to ping or act funny. I'm pretty knowledgeable on motor but when it comes to fine tuning i get lost on this stuff. I'm not worried about cost as much as I am on availability.

AV gas out of the pump is very common in lake havasu. I've heard of people doing the old marvel mystery trick but I also know a lot of people who run it straight without problems. U could take some timing out of it if u could verify can specs to be sure. I've been in this same situation with the motor out of my old offroad racetruck and it sucked. Fuel costs were ridiculous at 3.5 mpg. I used to run 110 vp and 91 mix and it was a pain in the ass.

Run it on each with timing adjusted accordingly and check the plugs.

Completely true.

Aviation fuel is very "dry"

We used to run either Marvel Mystery oil at like 200:1 or Amsoil two stroke oil at 300:1.

My dad has run AV gas in his day cruiser dry with no problems with a blown injected small block at 9.1 with 15lbs of boost, on a forced induction engine you can leave the exhaust valve seals out which helps with the dry cylinder thing, a n/a deal it's not a bad idea to run some marvel in it, also AV at an airport has to be tested daily and the quality is generally better then a lot of the gas at gas stations which now  contains up to 10% ethanol that can be hard on rubber seals and hoses, in my opinion, I would run straight AV with the marvel oil

91 with that cam and 10.7:1 is fine. Start at 32 deg timing and check plugs.  I bet you'd find 36 deg of timing works too though.

That'd be awesome. I just really don't wanna hurt the motor but 10.7:1 doesn't seem like too much compression to me but no professional. What kinda power do you guys think I'm making and opinions on the setup as its new too me.

I'd say 700-750.

So think I'm safe on 91 pump gas to run all the time cruising and making a pass at wot. Anything you'd change on my setup. Says he thinks it's a b impeller and when I had it out it deff hooks up and gets it and it'll spin at 6,000rpm of course I was only at wot for a few seconds at a time since the motor is new to me

I run half 91 half AV with marvels in my 10.5:1 olds and never have a problem. I stop at Blythe airport on my way in every trip.

My set-up is similar, 508ci, .715 lift and 12:1, 730 hp.
I run AV with marvel. I get my fuel at French Valley Airport in Murrieta.
