what parts do i need to swap out my olds 455 for a BBC ?
« on: April 28, 2012, 06:36:31 PM »
after a rebuild on my olds 455 it took a shlt and locked up after 15 min of run time  :banghead:.

its a 3 point motor mount setup (i think) where  it only has 2 mounts for the engine block and then a half ring that connects to the bell housing and berkeley pump ,

what do i need to swap out for a chevy setup ?

Aside from the actual motor and stuff needed for it to run you will need a new pto and possibly drive line, recommend going to a four point mount. I'm sure some more experienced guys on here can add more details

Your best bet would be to upgrade to either a rail kit or a cast four point mount setup.

Aside from the obvious, nothing from the Olds will work with the exception of the carburetor and maybe the ignition wires....

Just to start a list that can be added to;

Long Block
Oil pan
Valve covers
Flywheel/Flexplate
PTO and potentially DL like 74hondo stated if you have a one piece PTO
Alternator bracket
Distributor
Intake Manifold
Exhaust system
Starter
Water inlets and outlets
Motor mounts
Potentially a throttle cable bracket if you have the Berkeley Pack-A-Jet deal (stamped sheet metal POS).
Fuel pump if the current has a mechanical deal

Not to mention nuts, bolts, fittings, gaskets and so on... :screwy:

WOW sounds like i might be better off rebuilding the olds again ?  :-\,.. thanks for the info guys ..pretty sure i spun a bearing andkilled the bottom end ,..so  i found  some bearings on Jegs but not exactly sure what i need .. i found cam-main-rod bearings ,.. is that all the bearings i would need providing that all the actual parts are not damaged  ?

if i was to have a shop do a rebuild (just new bearings-hone- and check everything out and assemble)  what is a normal price i am looking at spending ?  i have never in my life had a car motor worked on so im not sure what im getting into yet  :o

Oldsmobiles are very particular about oiling for a "performance" application.   Have you talked to whoever rebuilt it to see if they will do anything for you?  You would want to try and determine what caused the problem so you don't just put bearings in it and have it happen again.

by rebuild i mean that i tore the engine down to the block , crank, and pistons ,.. had the heads checked out , and then i put it back together with new gaskets , seals , new cam and lifters , new oil pump and shaft , new rocker arms and push rods , new starter , new distibutor  , new timing chain and gears , new 750 cfm Q-jet carb (for sale BTW  ;) PM me ) , new water pump (yea i know LOL ,  but its the berkeley packajet setup )

so all the work putting it back together is on me ,.. the reason i did all this in the first place was because somebody in the past removed the thermostat in the motor and the first run i had the boat out it was blowing water in my oil after a few hard runs and the motor never heated up , so i lost oil pressure and broke a lifter and hopefully i didnt crack a head   :-(

after the "rebuild" the motor didnt even have 10 minutes of run time on it , i never even had a chance to break the new cam in before it locked up ,. :banghead:

and its not a high HP application , just a stock olds 455 from a car that has the "J"  heads and "F" block,..small log ex system and a stock pump setup ,.so i think something actually failed in the motor from not having a thermostat and blowing water in the oil ,.probably killed a bearing ?? . i never knew it had water in the oil untill i drained it all out and assumed () my temp gage was broken since it read 110 * but the block felt warm to the touch , so i never knew the thermostat was missing untill it was too late

Jet boats don't usually run t-stats. The water is pushed thru the engine from the jet pump in a continuous flow.
Most of us will show low temp on the gauge because the lake water is cool and just passes thru the engine.
Are you sure the water plumbing is correct?

You said you had the heads checked, did you have the block checked?  Maybe there is a crack somewhere that is letting water inside the block.

"after a few hard runs and the motor never heated up , so i lost oil pressure"

The Olds has issues draining the oil back to the pan from the heads. It will pump all the oil into the heads, and empty the pan if you run at hi rpm for to long.
Bone stock they seem to run forever but, when you start to pump them up, modifications should be made.
These issues can be addressed and fixed but there goes your budget on machine work.

It sucks you just bought all this new stuff for the Olds, but this is usually when all the Olds guys make the swith to Chevy. :-\
Good luck.

i am 1000 %  sure that my plumbing is correct , my setup is whats know as the "Berkeley Packajet combo" , you can see in this video exactly how its setup ,this is was right after i got it running and right before i took it for the "death run" ,.. sounded so good and crisp here ,.. never sounded this good or responsive since that day :(,.. and i never got to run it actually that hard,. just a few seconds of WOT  while playing with the carb on the lake ,.. made a few of those WOT  runs (few seconds) while the motor was still cold   and it finally shut off and started backfiring when i tried to start it

<iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HVZofWJtsbU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

it was built to be a thermostatically controlled system  fed by the jet pump ,.this system has a waterpump and thermostat just liek a car motor , dont ask me how i finally figured  out this was the coorect setup LOL  ,. better yet ill go ahead and tell ya for the newb laugh  :D,.. at first i thought the plumbing   wasnt correct  so i started to experiment with buying uneeded stuff and experimenting and searching google ,.. while experimenting i ended up cutting the blades off my water pump and JB-welded the fuking inside of the thermostat housing because i thought it was rusted through and feeding water to the block and through the intake mani at the same time causing my gaskets to blow,.. so with my "experimenting" my idea was to have the plumbing setup just like you are talking about ,.but this was the "poor boy but still looks factory ideerr  :o)... it worked pretty good but the logs got way to hot   . little did i know that there is supposed to be a thermostat in there and the part i JB welded up was for excess water to go to the logs to cool them down in a single pass (no preheating of water ) IMO i kind of like this setup alot better than your normal jet boat setup for a couple reasons ,. mostly because it keeps the block more full of water (IMO) amd allows the motor to run a constant temp no matter if you idle all day or run it WOT  pulling skiiers
