Which starter

Which starter are you guys running? I need one. Its going on a 454 w 10.5:1 comp. Any recommendations? When mine gets warm it wont start. Even when I jumped it with a screwdriver. Currently it has a delco heavy starter. Im looking to go light weight.

MSD mini starter or a jeg's. #555-10091 is what I have and works great 13 to 1 motor.

I heard the MSD starter is awesome and won't let you down. I plan on putting one in my crusader sand bar racer. $250 from competition products but well worth it from what I'm told.

Ooo. Kinda pricey for now. Season is pretty much over. But I will consider it in the future. Any others in a lower price range? Ive seen different styles

You can get one from Jeg's for #555-10090 for 144.99. That will work with your motor.

Remember the old but true saying, "you get what you pay for", if something is cheaper, something had to be cut, so my motto is when it comes to racecars, safety equip. engine parts or anything marine, cry once, not twice!

high tq mini starter. had an original ac delco style autozone huge starter and it was fine but i had 0 room to clean the bilge so it was swapped out from one i picked up on the steal from the long beach high perf swapmeet. the damn thing cranks WAAAY faster than the old autozone starter did. i remember when i changed my mustang to a high tq mini and i was like "holy crap!" the difference is night and day.

I had a Delco forever
Left it out in the elements for over a year and when the motor came back together threw it in and served me well years after.
Bought it with the lifetime warrantee so I could pick up another at my local 24 hour AutoZone.
I won't talk about the 2 "spare" mini high torque starters I burnt through though...

Some guys will cry foul at this: I bought a PMGR starter from DB Electrical. Wayyy less than $100. Knock on wood - no problems after 3 seasons. I'm happy with it. Turns over my 10.5:1 496 like it doesn't have plugs in it. The mounting casting looks a little "light" is the only complaint that I would make against it.

The $200 PMGR I bought from Summit (their branding) lasted one season. I took it apart after it died. The ball bearings apparently didn't like getting wet in the bilge. So that's a lesson that I learned: Fancy features found in some automotive products don't necessarily translate to an advantage in a marine environment. Look for one with sleeve bearings.

I've got a powermaster on my 455. Best investment I made even at 200$ handles up to 18:1. Cranks like there's no plugs in it. Lifetime warranty
